Can a block girdle be installed on a 400 block?
Would a girdled 400 hold up to 800 hp or so at <6800 RPM, assuming that it was put together right?

Yes, the girdle fits the 400/430 too. And yes, a properly built 400 will hold up if machined and assembled right.

The 400/430/455 blocks are indentical except for bore sizing and the mid-to-late '72 blocks and later had oblong instead of round "clean-out" holes and went to "double scallops" at the top middle of the block's deck surface instead of the early's single scallop. All '71 and later also came with 5/8" pick-up tube to oil pump passage too whereas '70 and earlier (except STG1) had 1/2".

I currently have two '72 blocks sitting that one is an early and has double-scallops BUT still round "clean-out" holes. The other is a later '72 and has the double scallops with oblong "clean-out" holes that remains as the casting "standard" all the way thru the end of 455 production in '76.

    Hope this helps...:)
