400 Crankshaft Snout Diameter?

I need to purchase a socket that fits over the snout of my crankshaft so that I may turn it. What is the diameter of the crankshaft snout? I have a stock 400 in my 67 Buick. I have heard that a socket for a BBC wil work, I just looking to confirm that.

    Thanks,

I am not positive, but I believe the balancer bolt takes a 1.125" socket. Why don't you just measure it? That's how I found out, when I bought mine.

I think he's looking for a socket that fits the crank end and key w/o the bolt on. If you Google crankshaft socket + look on Autozone, they only show 1 size for Buick/Pontiac...But they have the crank diams there so you can see what you need.

1 1/8" socket and an impact gun.

Ah. I never knew such a thing existed. Still seems a little redundant, when you can just use the bolt... but what do I know?

That's what I've always done; used the bolt. But it can be a little easier with the correct socket if working on a rebuild to turn motor over. You don't have to worry about the bolt being in the way when working on say, the timing gear/cover area.
Still, I am of no help as to size of crankshaft end. I have none handy right now to measure.

I measured 2 separate 455 cranks with a dial caliper. Both measure 1.440" half way down the snout. Both were slightly flared by 0.005-0.008" at the extreme end, but balancer was still a slip fit.

Unless someone just started making one, no crankshaft snout socket exists for the BBB.

A quick google search confirms this.

SBB can be done.. but not the big motors. They do have an unusually large snout diameter, as Jim says, just under 1.5".

You will have to use the bolt.

Thanks. I was looking for something that I could use to keep the crankshaft from spinning while tightening the camshaft sprocket bolts.

You can use a flywheel lock.

I took an old balancer and cut the end off, then welded a large 1/2 drive socket to it.

Good idea. After taking off my harmonic balancer, I found that my crankshaft snout diameter is 1.712in.

    Thanks,
