I'm only in the "thinking about it" stage.... does anyone know if a tremec tko 600 5 speed will fit in my 65 GS ? It has a T-10 4 speed. Can I use my existing bell housing? I converted my 70 GS 350 auto on the floor to a tremec and loved it. Went with the manual clutch but thinking of the hydraulic for this. The conversion was actually very easy (of course I never hooked up my neutral safety switch).... Great if you cruise alot .... Jim
Was the tremec in the '70 a TKO-600? If so did you have to cut the floor pan to make it fit? I would be surprised if it didn't require some floor pan cutting to make the TKO-600.
Why the 600 ? The TKO 500 will handle all the torque and horsepower of the nailhead. Think the 500 would be a better fit.
I went with the 600 because the first gear was ratio I think is better for the street than in the 500. I did have to cut the floor pan but not a big deal. My project started with me picking up a 4 speed bell housing at a swap meet and then it went from there..... The odd thing was my block did not have a tapping for the ball stud for the clutch Z bar. I had to drill and tap. All the parts are readily available for this swap. and installed well. You will need to get your drive shaft shortened. At 75 mph My 350 would be around 2300 rpm ! I also had installed 3:64 gears in the rearend which gave it good red-light punch ! I used a new automatic floor pan carpet which fit well too. I miss that tranny ! Good luck, Jim
Your bell housing will work and the drive shaft gets shortened. Don't know about floor pan clearance. Make sure you get one with the shifter in the right place.
Thanks for all the input. I hope to do this next winter. If my car had the original motor/trans/rearend I dont think I would go down this road. But since it it does not. ... I'll try and make a good cruising car ! Jim
