I'm in the planning stages of converting a 70 GS from an automatic transmission to a 4 speed. This particualr car came from the factory with a center console.

I want to add both the consolette and console when I do the conversion.

Can someone provide guidance on exactly where to cut the hole in the floor so that I get it right the first time? Also, need to know where to position both the consolette and console.

How did the factory cut the hole and install the consoles? Does the floor of all GS's have indexing points scribed/placed into the floor that would have provided the assembly workers to know where to cut the hole and mount the consoles or did the simply "eyball" it?

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

  3. Best bet would be to get the trans installed in the car and mock up where the shifter will come through the floor.

Here are some threads with floor hump photos:

As for the console and consolette, what I did was mounts the consolette over the shifter handle (installed through the floor) and remove the top of the consolette so the base remained and drilled holes for 1/4-20 threaded inserts.

Installed the inserts in the floor and I was done. I also did the same for the console with the buckets installed. The factory used a bracket that was welded to the floor pan. I don't think anyone repops that bracket.

    Hi Phil,

This is an easy fix. Get the floor hump that bolts to the floor and push it into place. It will only fit in one place. Then take a Sharpe and draw around the outside edge of the sheetmetal.

Next, remove the hump section and you will see the "tracing" of the outer most edge.

Step 2 - go 3/8 to 1/2 inch INSIDE of that box and make another smaller box with the Sharpe. This is the cut line.

Then comes the hard part, cutting the floor. I did it on a clean original '69 GS floor (no rust at all). But when I was done the cut appeared to be "factory" as I used a body saw, then filed the edges smooth.

After you get the hole made, can I have the cut out? I'm going back to automatic and need to fill in the hole.

    Jim
