Could you guys give me some advice on the proper timing for a '67 Skylark
340-4barrel. I have it set at 5 deg. BTDC, but it still doesn't act quite right. Should it be set with the vacuum advance connected, or disconnected? or is the 5 Deg. wrong. Many thanks to anyone who can advise me on this, SVENSK

Vacuum advance disconnected and plugged. Stock timing is 2 1/2* BTDC. Vacuum advance should be hooked to manifold vacuum. When you disconnect the vacuum line from the advance cannister(engine running), you should feel a strong vacuum pull at the tip of the hose. Connecting the hose after timing the motor should speed up the idle and smooth it out. Make sure the advance cannister is working, and that the diaphram is not bad. If you have the timing light connected, you should see the timing mark move up when you reconnect the hose, or you can use a mity-vac or equivalent to test the cannister.

Larry: I really appreciate the information. Will try this weekend to get the settings correct. I'm not a drag racer, but I expect my car to respond with the best it's got. Thanks again, SVENSK
