Is there an EASY way to visually tell a 322 from a 264?

Get the number stamped on the block deck opposite the dip stick and post it here. If it has a ballancer with seperate pulleys on the crank front it's most likely a 322 if it has cast pulley it's most likely a 264 .

    322 vs. 264

Judd-the numbers are 13683604 - I know (think) the 4 means a Special, and I guess most of them were 264s. Anyway, thanks for the help. The lower harmonic balancer/pulley is a single cast piece.

    My info says it's a 264 out of a 55 Special.

    Judd,

Where did you find this? The number on mine is different (starts with 116 ends with a 5, don't know the complete number by heart). Familiar number?

www.buicks.net has a list with motor number info. 55 motors start with number 720080 and 4-5-6-or 7 for the last number depanding on the series car it went in. 56 motors start at 1460023 and series number.

    where's the number?

    Century,

Can you post a pic of the place you found the number? I can't seem to find it. The other numbers I mentioned (1166349-1 and -5) are the head numbers and are from a 54-56 engine.

It does have a ballancer with seperate pulleys on the crank front as Judd mentioned (buicks.net doesn't help me out here either), just want to make sure.

    thanx,
    Peter.

The head casting can be any 264 or 322 53 to 56 or 56 to 59 Chevy truck according to my info?
Try this for the stamping numbers site.

The ballancer info is what I have seen on the motors I have checked out. I have been told by a guy in Gulfport that his 53 322" has the cast pulleys but I haven't seen the car just talked on the phone and he may be wrong?
