  1. Anybody have a car with a 308S they drive on the street regularly? i'd really like to hear from people who have a VERY healthy engine such as 600 -650 hp

I have a custom grind that is close to the 308s. Has a little over .600 lift. Not bad on the street it's all in how your tune-up is. I run a 1050 dominator so I turn the mixture screws in about a 1/4 turn on all for and that cleans up the idle. I also run a vacuum canister cause the vacuum is very low. You can check out my setup in my garage. http://www.v8buick.com/garage_vehicle.php?do=view_vehicle&id=107

Did it for years after the 436 I built for a t-bucket "altered" came out of the drag car and went into my Wildcat with a fresh 462 short block The build is pretty much the same as what's in my signature except I was originally running ported 430 heads with Stage 1 valves.

Even with the 3.07 gears it was fun as could be. A loose converter, good compression and vacuum assist for the brakes is a big help. I don't currently have vacuum assist, so if I have to make more than two pumps of the brake at low rpm, assist is gone.

My original 430 rockers with adjustable pushrods held up well for a long time, but just a couple of years ago one of the tips broke, and while checking that I also noticed a lobe going flat, so I did the aluminum head upgrade with roller rockers and a switch to the TA 294-04F solid cam at the same time. It sounds just like the 308S, but with the cam being healthy, a more robust valvetrain and the Gessler ported TA heads it's now more fun than ever and more tolerant of 93 octane pump gas.

  4. the engine i have in mind is purpose built for pump gas and made over 600 hp and nearly 600 ft lbs of torque on the dyno. according to the racing calculators that should be good for mid to high tens in a 3600 lb car. to bad most of the time it would be street driven.

My X is a 462 4spd 500 RWHP 355 gears 13:1 compression, so it likes 112 octane I have power brakes with no vacuum canister I do have a little trouble at times with the brakes but it is ok. I love driving the car it is a lot of fun. The cam is choppy at around 2200 RPM so I changed my Dominator to a 2 circuit so it would not put the extra fuel in at that RPM.

had that in my 65 17 years ago, street legal,I did not go very far with it,11.5 compression, regular high test gas,I would add some cam-2 ones in a while. The car's weight was 3400 with me in it,a Dominator on top,it ran 10.27 on Buick day in Engleshtown ad 10.22 at Atco, also Buick day. This with steel heads ported by the only,Gregg Gessler.I never raced anybody on the street with that one.Any dirt or pot hole and you are gone.I did race some people on the track for $,they just could not believe that a Buick could beat them. All the above numbers are written in the North-East Newsletter.BrunoD.

I've had a 308S in mine for years. I love this cam. I have a 72 GS with a 464. I ran this cam with 11.3-1 compression for years, and now 12.79-1 compression. It is a GREAT street/strip cam for a healthy 455.

Not a 308 but a custom solid lifter cam for my blower setup. Will never go back to hydrolic lifters. Put in a hydroboost system for the brakes. If you want to stay with vac assist get an electric vac pump the vacuum cans are not worth the bother.

I ran a very comparable Comp cam on Hot Rod Drag Week for 3 years on pump gas, 10.7:1 compression. Ran mid 10's.

    I like it.
Been running it for 5 years on the street with manual brakes and steering. Get about 6-7" vac at idle.
Found it more streetable with with the 4150 style 1050 quickfuel than the 3 ciricuit dominator. I run locked ignition with an MSD 20 deg starter retard and use a manually shifted switch pitch.

I just got done building a 468 with a 308s, eagle rods , je pistons and 12.25:1 comp, it made 580 hp and 600 ftlbs . the motor runs pretty good on the street, all i had to change was a bigger radiator because the bump in compression brought the heat up besides that and the cost of 110 octane the set up is a beast on the street with eagle ss drag radials and a 3.23 gear!

Nice cam if you like your car sounding like its dragging steel garbage cans down the street!

  15. Thanks for the input guys, however i decided to have JW build me a stock appearing 470 with a hydraulic roller cam and stage 1 SE heads. should make somewhere in the 500 hp range and look bone stock with a Q-jet and stock ported exhaust manifolds.

What heads do you have? I'm putting mine together now. Identical build but 11.0:1 with Stg 2 SE's.

If you lay the shortside radius way back on the se's the flow#'s pick up big time. I picked up 27+ cfm@400" laying it back. No other mods. Didn't hurt any other flow#s at any lift. Stayed the same at .100" and gained everywhere above.

That's good info. My SE's flow pretty well but the guy that did the Porting was a little "soft" on the exhaust side. It still flows well at 70% efficiency but definitely left a little on the table. That's why I went with a 308.

I had to check this cam from TA cause it sounded like the hydraulic cam I use from Kenne Bell. The 7XR. 542 in 535 ex @ 1.6 rocker, 110 lobe center, duration at .050 272 in 282 ex It has more lift but I have more duration. I tried to see where the idle smoothes out and it was about 3000 rpm's I love this cam but have never tried it on the street. What stall are you guys using with these big cams driving on the street? I say the hell with power brakes and the bigger the cam to make Buicks kick ass on the road the vettes can't touch us if we put a 6 speed automatic in it.

I use a 4000stall 9.5 JW converter, it does not drive like a standard car on the street, but is very driveable without to much converter slip. It slips untill 2000rpm and then all slip is gone.
