i'm having a heck of a time trying to research ratio's on the factory 3 speed manuals. doesn't seem to be much interest in them for some reason. o No:  so, does anybody know what the ratios for 1st and 2nd where and/or the name and codes they went by? ya know, like a 2 ring M20.... any help is greatly appreciated.
A Hemmings mag last year had an all syncro 3spd manual (74 GTO)with the gear ratios in it---I'm not home till Tuesday--if someone doesnt have it for you before then I will post it----Pete
Could you not compute this info by relative tooth count? For instance a 69-72 first gear was 29 teeth. Second gear was 24 teeth. Let me know what you think.
Could you not compute this info by relative tooth count? For instance a 69-72 first gear was 29 teeth. Second gear was 24 teeth. just as with a ring and pinion i have to know the tooth count on the primary gear as well as the secondaries in order to come up with anything useful. we could probably make a presumption on the primary/drive gear if we knew the # of teeth on the 3rd cog. without that ... we're just spinning our wheels. puns're bad, mmmmkay? :spank:  anybody ever hear of a 3 ring trans? if someone doesnt have it for you before then I will post it----Pete thanks Pete. even if it doesn't turn out to be necessary.
I have a Buick 3 speed trans but I am unsure of the year. I will look for the tooth count on the other gears. I know the other is necessary but I have not had the same to reseach wht it might be.
Here are the specs from my '69 Buick chassis manual for the 3 speed manual transmission: L-6 1st 2.84:1 2nd 1.68:1 V-8 1st 2.54:1 2nd 1.5:1
Let me revise that, the first posting was for the Special, GS 350 column shift only, Skylark, and sportwagon models. Here the numbers for the HD 3spd GS400(floor), GS350 floor shift only, and Wildcat(column) 1st 2.42:1 2nd 1.61:1 Hope this helps! I'll check my motors manual to see if I find other info. Are you looking for a specific year and application?
My Motors Manual supplies the following info for the Buick three speed manual shift transmission. It referrs to the different trannys as "types" of which there are a toatl of 12 types for all makes covered. The following are types listed for Buick 7,& 9 for the seniors, and 7,9, and 3 for the intermediates. Looks like a lot of the Fords shared the type 7 transmission. If you need more info regarding a spec app I can post it. Theres a lot of different cars I'd have to list here. No mention of ratios. This manual covers the 67-73 model years
Are you looking for a specific year and application? no. i'm building a Final Drive calculator in Excel with all of the factory transmissions and their gearings so we can quickly find out what swapping trans's or new rear gear sets is going to do for us. i want ALL variations. i think. this may turn out to be one hell of a lot more complicated than i was hoping. i believe i've got all of the major GM auto's and 4 speed sticks already. when i get the 3 speeds rounded out and a little page layout cleanup done it'll be schwwweeeeeeettttt! sturm and goat (kinda like sturmunddrang, ja? :Brow: ): gah! i need some way to identify the different ratios. Saginaw is good. i'm sure the "one/two/three ring" stuff are shadetree mechanic terms ... if anybody can chime in on field identifiers for these it would surely be helpful. Auto trans question: what was the round figure for torque convertor slippage again? 5%? VBA question: the macro is requiring me to use "Range (C9)" to designate a single cell and evidently there is no "Cell()" function. this aggravates the hell out of me. is it really true that VBA uses the "Range" command for all calls to the spreadsheet? this isn't going to be a functionality issue in the sheet, just tedious.
of course, it goes without saying that once i'm done building it the .xls sheet will be available on request to anyone who wants it. :beer
Goat is that just a normal Motor manual you've got or is that specifically for transmissions? if it's the regular manual i'll have to dig up mine. i checked in a 62 Motor and i didn't see a section where it was giving ratios....
Bob--the 74 GTO 3spd article was in FEB 2006 Hemmings here is how they listed TRANSMISSION Type.................SAGINAW three-speed manual Ratios................1st 2.54:1 2nd 1.50:1 3rd 1.00:1 REVERSE2.63:1 This was hooked to a 3:08 Safe T track rear----Thats all I got/ Pete
The following are types listed for Buick 7,& 9 for the seniors, and 7,9, and 3 for the intermediates. but every type '7' has the same ratio's? maybe this won't be so bad... don't forget the ratios for reverse. silly i know, but i'm doing this now and i want to get it done right.
