Just acquired an NOS 3.42 (41-12) ring and pinion from a closed Buick dealer. The box is in shreds with no part number visible but date on box is 11/66 so will be for 67 or earlier. The ring gear is stamped 1375349 and pinion is stamped 1375350. In Buick parts books all ring and pinion parts numbers are listed for matched gear sets, not the separate pieces.

Anyone know years/models these were used on?

    Thanks!

3.42 was not a ratio used in '64-67 8.2 10 bolts. If 12 bolt holes on the ring gear, 3.42 was used in the 8 7/8 P series rear ('65-70 BIG Pontiacs), BUT I've had that gearset before & the #137 prefix does not ring a bell.

How many bolt holes to attach to the carrier 10, 12???

Currently, I'm away for the holidays, but getting quite a bit yarding in. If noone can ID, I will ck GM ring & pinion part number reference data when we get back.

    Got Posi?

John, by any chance was that Jack Jones Buick in Bethlehem a few weeks ago? I was at the auction, but didn't see much worth buying.....

I was heartbroken to hear the owner recently threw out the old sales invoices and service records from the 1960's. I believe my '65 GS 'vert may have been sold thru that dealer. Oh well.

BTW, what diameter is the ring gear? 3.42's were avail on the 'big' Buicks...

Def possible the gears could be early 9 3/8 BUICK.

    Hi Roger and Walt,

    Thanks for the replies!

I'm away now too--will post with the diameter (where measured??) and the number bolt holes when I return.

My parts books show 3.42's were available beginning with the 62 Wildcat and continuing 63 and later in all big car series. The part numbers changed from year to year for the ring and pinion set and no numbers listed by component.

Yes Walt, it came from the Jack Jones sale. Sorry to hear about the sales records being trashed--who knows what else they weren't smart enough to save!

Just got a chance to measure:

There are 12 bolt holes on a 7" circle to mount ring gear to carrier, and ring gear is about 9-3/8" OD.

    Can anyone ID it now??

    Thanks!
