    Woodie - Unless it's a numbers matching type of deal...I wouldn't build anything less than a 350".

Parts for those old 283's cost quite a bit more, so picking up a core 350" and building that would be more cost effective...not to mention - substantially more powerful!!:Smarty:

Some of the 283's could be bored out to the 4" bore that the 302/327/350 had. FYI, the 283" and 307" had the same bore - but, the 307" had the larger main journal diameter of the 350". You could actually build a 360" from a 307" block using a 400" crank (you'd need custom pistons though).

What kind of vehicle would this be going into?

I agree... Put the 283 in the trading post and let someone that needs one buy the little V-8. Then pick up a good 350 core and have a good time with the cheap parts.

About 8 years ago I had a 63 Impala with the original 283 in it.
Thats a small motor, and a big car.

    But....
I put the absolute biggest cam I could get into it without requiring any machine work (I ignored the "you need special valve springs with that cam" warning). I also used a 4500 stall converter. I'm sure it was a terrible combination, but I wanted the lopiest idle I could get. Didn't care how fast it was.

It ran 14's, got great gas mileage, and sounded like it ran 11's. (It sounded great)
Man I wish I wouldn't have sold that car.

Oh yeah... I never touched the bottom end of the engine. It had 100K+ miles on it. I ran it up to 6500+ RPM's every single day, usually 3 to 4 times a day, and also raced street class at Norwalk every weekend with it. Half my trophies came from that car.
    Great little engine!

A friend of mine built one up 'on the cheap' in his early racing days. He ported the stink out of the heads, put the biggest cam and stiffest springs in he could find. He used to rev that little engine to 10k rpms at the strip!! Worked good with a standard tranny and a ton of gear in the rear!!:TU:

Fun at the track....but high rpms = short parts longevity on the street!!:Dou:
