ok i have a 70s style 8.5 GM rear end with press in axles i pulled a 30 spline posi and axle shafts with c clips that i would like to put in to my 28 spline press in. Will this work? will converting to c clips give me a problem will the axles fit right in and seat the seal correctly or will i have problems with leaks??
You will need to change to 30 spline axles or contact Jim at www.jdrace.com and see if has 30 spline spider gears for you. No need for c-clips...the carrier will work in your housing.
If it is a 71-72 A body 8.5 10 bolt, like the ones found in the 71-72 Skylark/GS, and Oldsmobile, the axles are bolt in, and there is no need for the C clips. When I built my 71 8.5, I used brand new 30 spline Moser axles, and a new 30 spline Eaton posi.
Donovan, Good idea to add at least your first name to your signature line. Since you stated "70s"...then that is a 28 spline carrier....can you provide some pics? Jim will ask for the same info. If it is like the one I have pictured below, GM 410408....it is a 28 spline carrier with S-spring and will accept 2.73-4.56 gear sets. Notice it has four large 8s cast on the carrier.....the 410409 carriers has three large 9s and it is for 2.41-2.56 gears but can be used for 2.73-up gears with a ring gear spacer for street use...Jim will also have the correct spacer and bolts.
wE NEED to know the vehicle you pulled the 30 spline carrier and axles from? If the axles are c-clip they WILL NOT WORK IN YOUR BIA Buick 10 bolt rear. PERIOD. NO WAY NO HOW. WHAT year EXACTLY is your car? You can not be so vague with the early 70's 8.5 as the 1971 1972 will be different from the 1973-1977 and again different from the 1970. So we have 3 different rears you could have. Pictures of the rear cover will help pics of the posi axles etc. ALL will help. Ill take pics tonight but i belive thats the same differntial of the picture i took off google, the 30 spline carrier and axles are out of a 92 caprice. The rear end im building now i do not know what it is out of cause it was in the middle of a field at my grandfathers
The rear pictured above is the 71-2 Cutlass/Skylark 8.5" corporate rear...you can only use the posi from the Impala provided you get the 30 spline axles for your car.....much easier and better off selling the Impala posi and buying one like I have pictured or do a trade/swap with Jim and be set.
Same rear in both cars. It's an 8.5, but the axles are C clip, and are different than the A body rear axles.

Caprice/Impala rear is not even close.....will not work. It is wider so the axle shafts you got will not work. The carrier you pictured is the Auburn style......talk to Jim/Monzaz to discuss your options.
OK the 30 spline posi is a GM 1990-1996 Caprice and impala CONE type unit NOT clutch...IT is 30 spline unit. YOU can use the posi in a 71 72 but you need BOLT IN AXLES NOT c-clip because your rear axle assembly housing ends are for BOLT IN AXLES bearing system ONLY. PLUS the axles are too long and the axles are probably 5 on 5" wheel bolt pattern too. You need to just sell all the parts and buy the correct parts Your just barking up the wrong tree, LAwn and city all together. I understand you want to try to make this work but you just can not make a dog a cat... just NOT POSSIBLE. ou: :beer :error: :TU:
