212vs.284 t a performance cam? Strike up the debate

    You found it on you tube! Sean problem was as you know the 350 is not cheap to build and I spent way more than anticipated or budgeted but had to draw the line. I would have loved to add roller cam, roller rockers with forged pistons but maybe next time and I still shake my head on how much my motor cost to do. The head work alone was the price of a crate SBC LOL I still would like to find out how much power she is making and one of these days have to try a 800 cfm qjet on her. Yes this thread is about the 212 and 284 but don't forget the other cams out there either as every combo is different. Dave N you local to me I just sold my home so my car is in Sandusky but if I can get her home for a few weeks I will show you what that cam produces:3gears:

    I don't remember what they told me when I bought my 284 cam but on TA's website both cams have the same listed power range, 1500-5500. Is that information incorrect?

    In the old catalogs, the power ranges are different. They show the wider power band and were updated a couple years ago in the catalog, but the website was never changed.

    I don't really know honestly. I just go by what the newer (downloadable .pdf file) catalog says.

    RPM ranges are really dependent on combination. The listings just give a generalized idea.

    Factors such as timing, degreeing, CFM flow, exhaust restriction, compression ratio, etc. will affect the engines overall power band. Then there's the 'shift point' where the engine is actually better off shifting above peak HP so that it brings the RPMs up to a better torque range in the next gear.

    This seems to be more true for the 350 than the 455. Just have to get a feel for it and tweak it to your tastes.

    ALSO...the cams listed on TA's website and catalog are descriptions for how the cams behave in 455's. Those cams were never engineered for 350's, though you can tighten up the lobe center to 110 from 112 and lower the power band down a smidge as a bandaid for smaller cubes...

    In all honesty though, there really is no magic number, only psychologically satisfying numbers. Whatever makes you feel warm and fuzzy. :p

    Funny, just got off the phone with "TA", explained to them how i had a stock 1973 455, nicely built 200r4 with long tube headers, b4B intake, holley 750 carb.Water pump houseing and now radiator leaking, ripped apart last tuesday to repair,while all out thinking of installing a bigger cam, they recommended the w284 for a little lope and perfornance upgrade, reminded guy that my car is a cruiser, just want a little added sound and performance out of the 455. Now is the 284 to much for me, still wantvthe highway cruise butadded lope sound also without major engine rebuild ?

    In a 455, the 284 is a nice cam.
    Still cruise worthy.

    got that cam in a 430 with shorty headers ported heads and intake with 800 edelbrock carb and msd dist 2200 stall. 3.42 gears nice lope and plenty o torque have the cam degreed as mine ended up needed to being advanced some
