I'm doing my first tranny rebuild using the Haynes manual. It's pretty fascinating so far. I'm still in the disassembly process but I'm rebuilding because the tranny wouldn't shift in to 1st or OD. I'm going to try to take more pictures during the rebuild but if you ever wondered why your 2004r won't shift in to 4th gear...
Mark, Is this a GN/TR 200-4R tranny, or just a regular one? How long did it hold up against your 455?
This is out of an 85 GN. I got it free from my brother but it already had 1st and 4th gear gone when I got it.
Hey is that manual pretty detailed? I got one for a rochester and while it showed the main stuff there was plenty of small stuff it missed. Although thats what my friend told me and he rebuilt the carb. Patrick
I would always like it to be a little more detailed but it's been pretty good so far. I don't think it's left anything out but I haven't gotten in to reassembly yet. It covers the 350, 400 and a few others as well.
I don't see any real defining reason why first gear wasn't working. I haven't completely disassembled all these parts yet though. When I put this tranny in first it would lock up the rear tires.
I think that one is actually a Casio. I use it for a MIDI controller. It usually sits where my tranny parts are now.
Those pictures are of the direct or 3rd gear drum. SOme pretty good damage there though. 4th gear clutches are the 2 big ones right behind the pump. need to machine the apply piston and put 3 in there. Jim Burek p.a.e enterprises
Hey thanks. Good advice. I know you can't see from the pictures but why would the rear wheels lock up when I manually shifted it to first gear? I could move the wheels if I pushed on the accel. pedal but the motor was torqueing like there was a load on it.
Don't know for sure without seeing everything, But from the looks of that drum, it may have been binding up when in manual low possibly causing the problem. You want to check all the sprags and planetaries as well. Jim Burek
I just posted in the parts wanted area to get that part since it doesn't come with the rebuild kit (of course).
This is truly the poor man's way to do it yourself. I don't have a tranny stand so I put it on a flat board and screwed two peices of wood on either end for support during reassembly. The front side of the tranny is up on the wood and the back side is placed up against it so the output shaft wouldn't slide out.
I put this pinion bearing on the back so I could allow the output shaft to stick out a little bit. It's almost the exact length I need.
When I put the friction plates in, I dipped them in ATF like the book told me to do. But then I put Lucas Transmission fix on both sides of the friction plates and steel plates.
