I have a 88 Skylark with 22,000 orginal miles. The blower motor is not working at any speed. I believe the problem is the resisitors or the relay but can't find either one. Any idea where these are located on this car? It has AC.

    Thanks,

    Jack

There is no blower relay, just a resistor. The resistor is mounted on the evaporator case under the hood. It will have a plug in with 3 wires running to it. It mounts with two screws. It should be close to where the blower motor is mounted.

I will attach a wiring diagram so you know what color wires do what.

    blower resistor

How much would one expect to pay for one of these resistors?

    Re: blower resistor

IF....the dealer has these still about $15 ......you can get em at a salvage yard also for peanuts.

heck on an 88 you'd be able to find these at almost any auto parts store. a 92 chevy van has one almost identical to the setup as the one in my 70 skylark.

i think the one for the van was about 9 bucks (autozone)

Price sounds about right...I paid around that for my 90 C1500 when it went. That was at the dealer too!

    info

Thanks for the info. If I found the right thing, mine has 4 wires - and extra blue one. Is this possible? I think I will just go pick one up at autozone and see if I can find it :)

    Thanks again,

    Jack

    4 wires

my 70 skylark actually had 4 wires. 3 in a line and one off to the side on the same plug if you think its the right thing just pull it out and see if any of the coils are broke.. although i think now the resistors are in a lil metal box
i also have 4 wires at the relay for the fan but mine look to be cooled off within the air box and allow air to move past them..

the weird thing is though that you should still have high working if the resistor went out. if not. i'd check the relay first. i think its about 15 bucks.. also have at autozone. (its nice with gm vehicles they dont change very many of there parts so many places stock these parts

atleast thats how mine went out.

I noticed that with my resistor what caused my low speeds not to work but high would work what caused this on mine is that the ground connection burned off. replaced the plug cleaned the contacts and good as new.

if none of it is working i'd check the relay first. then go from there. well second check the fuse first.

Nope, mine isn't working at any speed. Where is the relay? The first reply to my message says there isn't a relay?? THe fuse is fine. I sure appreciate all the help here. It's cold today - sure would like it to work :)

I'm not familar with the newer skylarks..
so i couldent tell you location. generally its a lil silver metal box maybe on the firewall on mine that is and some a bit newer... but again i havent seen an 88

I stopped at autozone on the way home last night and got a relay. It is $8.95. Found it on the far right on the firewall and replaced, still now action from the blower. Not sure what else to check. Thanks for all your alls help.

    check the blower itself.

see if you can find the 2 wires going to it and connect them to the battery. if it runs great if not blowers shot.. going to guess that it may not be too fun to replace either.

if its like a truck thoguh it may be right there against the firewall.

switch in the dash may not work anymore but there are better ways to check it. at the relay does it turn on (click) when you move the fan switch
