1988 Caddy Brougham VS 2010 Audi Q7 quattro 4dr 4.2L Prestige SUV

I was driving 80 MPH on an empty freeway the other day when this Audi SUV (350 HP) passed me like I was standing still. I floored the gas and caught up, we were both going about 110 MPH at this point. We drove together for about 300 miles cruising at about 85 MPH most of the time. Well after he past one of the slower cars and moved to the slow lane I stayed in the fast lane and got beside him, he gave me the thumbs and and it was on. I stayed with him from 85 MPH to 110 MPH, I call that a kill considering I have $900 into the Caddy! I saw them later at the gas station and they said they were really surprised the big old caddy could move so well! Too bad I did not have the Twin Turbo Skylark to really put them to shame. :Brow:

You were lucky that he didn't have a V12 diesel Q7, that would put your little hair dryer A-body to shame.....:bla:
Let's see if that will last for 300 miles at 250 KM/H, a diesel Q7 can do that all day long.

 

Unfortunately our speed limits and police keep us from being able to go that fast for that long here.... I do want to enter my car into one of those top speed competitions though!

 

How did you get that Olds 307 to get UP to that speed in that barge? Or does it have the Chevy TBI 350? Friend has a 1988 Caddy Bro-Ham (as they call them down here) with the olds 307 and 200-4r tranny that can't get out of its own way. All of the systems check out good on the OTC monitor, and it has good maintenance history. Just NO power. EVER.

 

It is a Olds 307 in it, mine is a 88 Brougham.

When I got the car it was a reall dog, but for $100 I bought it for the trans. I drove it a bit and liked it so I did a budget tune up:

-Removed cat converter, and muffler. Had a shop bend a single 2 1/4" straight pipe from the Y pipe to the bumper. It was not too loud without a muffler. This mod helped the power BIG TIME and also increased the fuel mileage.
-new air filter
-Oil and trans fluid change
-New AC plugs and MSD wires

It drove a lot better at this point and I was averaging 19 US MPG on the highway:

Then I took it up a notch with some parts I got for next to nothing, paid $20 for the heads and intake:

-Cold air intake with K&N filter
-Rebuilt Q jet (this is the one with the computer contriolled idle mixture).
-Home ported 85 5A 307 heads and 4 bb intake manifold. The 87+88 (called the 7A) versions have TINY intake and exhaust ports compared to the early ones. I did spend about 18 hours porting these heads and intake
-Long tube headers and dual 2.5" exhaust
-Timing set at 3 degrees more than stock
-Tires rated for high speed
-new shocks (ditched the air leveling system)

Not sure the gearing but it must be about 2.56 and the 2004R shifts to 4th at about 100 MPH when I have my foot down. No vibrations or anything at 120 MPH.

I averaged 21 US MPG with an average speed of about 75 MPH over the 8 hour drive. The best MPG I have gotten so far was 23 which is not bad for a HUGE car that rides like a dream.

I can't buy a 307 pushing anything over a 100 mph. especially a big old caddy. gutless wonder.

The car felt safe and smooth at those speeds, no vibrations or issues at all... I have gone through the car, and it needed very little, brakes were good, suspension just needed shocks which I did. It drives perfectly, not like one would expect a $900 car to drive. I have put 18,000 kms on the car since I got it last year, not one hickup, stall or strange noise. I drive it for 7 hours straight and it never even heats up.

I agree the 307 is pretty gutless but this one responded well to the head porting, headers etc. Still nothing exciting but it moves the car a lot better than stock. Next time I take the car on the highway and have a passenger I will make a video for ya.

 

Yup, it's a good thing you weren't racing one of the new V12 diesel Q7 Audi's that are only priced at 150,000 us dollars, have 4 more cylinders than your V-8 and are 30 years newer.

 

LOL, I thought the same thing.... Like I said the guys in the Audi thought it was down right HILARIOUS that I could keep up with them in an Old 88 Caddy. When I told them about my Twin Turbocharged Skylark thier jaws almost hit the ground!

 

I miss my Caddy. I had a triple black 1993 Sedan DeVille a few years back. It had the multi-port 4.9 V8 (although the 4.6 Northstar was available in '93, not many people opted for it that early on). I had a Magnaflow split exit muffler installed that was meant for a V6 f-body, and the converter was removed since it became clogged. Every now and then for laughs, I'd obliterate the poor 215/75/15 white walls from a red light.

My friend had a 2002 GTP Grand Prix at the time and it always surprised me that my luxo-liner would whoop up on his supercharged 3.8.

WOW, great cars! I have been driving my truck the past few weeks and MAN I miss the CADDY... I will be insuring the Caddy in the next 2 weeks because it rides SO nice! I would rather drive my 70 Skylark however it is in in for paint and turbochargers... At least I can still go fast with class!

I would like to swap in my spare high comp. Buick 350 however a 455 Olds swap would be easier.

 

The 57 is a 365 with 325hp factory twin 4 bbls, man does it slurp premium gas :shock:
The 79 deville Phaeton has a 425 but is strangled with emissons crap and single exhaust
It still has some giddy-up but with a little head work and dual exhaust I'm sure it would sing

 

Yeah, a nice dual exhaust would help HUGE! At very least swap to a Magnaflow muffler.
