I have a 1876 455 in my 64 buick special. I last night my car broke down when I was cruising. Today after veh was towed I decided to mess with the Dist cap. The HEI coil was bad. Needless to say I had a brain fart and messed up the wires. Does any body know where I can find a diagram of the firing order for a HEI 455. I did a search on AOL and found nothing. Your help is greatly appreciated.
Firing Order Probably if you'd done search on here, you may have found it. But anyway 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 What's your real name, should but a signature on your posts, too!
see a wiring diagram A 1876 455!! Holy Crap, thats an oldy!...just bustin your chops. Anyway, if you don't have a manual with a factory diagram, your local Library has service manuals and you can photo copy them. Anyway, the factory set up of a 1970 shows the #1 wire on the cap is the closest one to the number 2 cyllinder. or about 7 o'clock when looking at it form the front. I am not sure if 1973 HEI is any differentand my 73 engine is up in the shop. If i get up there, I will verify the corrct factory location for you.
1973 HEI on the 455 I just ran up to the shop and looked at a 73 455 I have, and the location for the number one terminal is more like 8 o'clock. Always a good idea to pull number one plug and turn it over several times with the cap off and note where number one is really hitting. :TU:
wouldnt the area where the #1 cylinder post is pointing be relative to alot of things? such as: timing and distributor removal/replacement (meaning the gear was slightly or even excessively rotated when replaced that where it was stock, and the distributor was rotated to compensate?) or is there some kinf od stop that keeps it lined up that i dont know of?

yes, find #1TDC yes, that is why you need to check your TDC #1 cyll and line up the dist firing order accordingly.
Hi Guys, You are correct in finding #1 TDC BUT do not forget to remove the #1 spark plug and determine that it is ALSO on the compression stroke or your rotor will be pointing 180 off! Then, and only then, should you find that post as #1 and then follow the firing order in a clockwise fashion. Hope that clarifies things for you...
Don't forget to go clockwise on the cap from #1 and the cyl banks are 1,3,5,7 on drivers side (front to rear) and 2,4,6,8 on passengers side.
When you need it ....it is there, right in front of you, it is showing ("welded") on the intake: firing order and # cilinders
