Can anyone tell me where the casting dates would be on a 1973 455 engine for the heads and block? I have the car vin number, thanks to you guys, as 4AD37V3H534632 and the motor vin of 43H534632. Any help would be appreciated to see what I really am buying. Thanks, Gary the newbie!
On the face of the head under the valve covers. The head numbers are there too. 73-74 production heads were 1241860. The date for the block is on the front of the block itself. The date for the intake is on top in front of the carb. These cast dates are only for the month and day so you have to look at the cast number for the part to tell the year. The issue comes when some parts have the same cast number for multiple years. For exxample the cast number for a 73 block runs across more than one year but in your case you know the year from the partial Vin.
Gary, Starting in early 1971 the casting dates for the blocks were moved from the front of the block to the top surface of the lifter galley, so the only way you can tell when they were built is by taking the intake off. Duane
