    Thanks for the reply, Vince. I was just reading about how valves can in some cases hit the outer edge of the piston, if there is insufficient clearance. I was wondering whether the result was like we see in that picture. My setup may be close to doing the same thing. (ouch)

    That is very typical of detonation, seen it many times

    Yep, Kurt is right. That's what happens to a cast piston under detonation. No valve contact there.

    Better than what happens to a hyper piston, they explode.

    You have to really try hard to hurt a forged piston with detonation, most times you take out the rod bearings first.
