Did a 1970 Riviera GS come with a Stage 1 engine? I found one with a chrome air cleaner, painted valve covers, and posi rear. I know Stage 1s came in some 1973 Rivieras because I found one once.
The conventional wisdom is there were no HP (or stage 1) engines outside of A bodies for the 70 model year. So none for E bodies. Also even though they use the stage 1 emblems a few years none of the non A bodies had stage 1 engines. They were HPs which use a different camshaft. HP options for big cars began in the 71 model year.
Thanks! Just to clarify, I once found a 1974 Riv with factory Stage 1 heads. I know because I removed the heads off the original engine back in the mid 80s. Sold the heads to a racer in Covington, GA in 2001. Are you saying the 1970 GS engine does not have Stage 1 heads? Just trying to figure out if it is worth my time to buy the thing for $450. IThe car was abondoned in the early 80s, but ithe engine is complete from air cleaner to oil pan. The air cleaner is chrome, but the valve covers are not. Thanks again!
In 1970 the Riviera GS was a ride and handling option that included the 3.42 posi axle. The engine was no different than any other Riviera. The 71 and 72 Riv GS had a little more HP and the big valve heads. In 73/74 the Riviera GS package went back to ride and handling only. The Stage 1 engine option had to be ordered separately so not every 73 GS Riv was a stage 1. In fact roughly only 1/3 of the GS cars produced had the stage 1 option as well.
Thanks guys. Just one more clarification if you don't mind. I understand all 1970 Rivs came with the same 455. Did that engine have standard size or Stage 1 size valves? Thanks.
