    Hey guys!

Another dumb question. My emergency brake will not release and I am not sure what is going on. How does the release mechanism work? Could it be broken or maybe a rusted brake cable not releasing. There is tension on the handle of the brake release but the pedal will not come back up. It moved when I engaged the brake but it sure will not budge now. I have the service manual and found where it talks about the emergency brake but I couldn't find any info to help me fix mine. I sure would appreciate any pointers that you all might have.

    Thanks,

    Eric

Look at the ratcheting catch on the pedal hanger. trace where your release lever goes and see it its pulling that release all the way back. I tested mine for the first time while sitting at a stop light just for grins. It got stuck and I had to drive a block with the shoes dragging before I could get off the road.

If the system is not used on a regular basis Eric, you run the risk of having the rear brake shoes lock up ! :Dou:
You can try to loosen the cables going to the rear wheels by backing off the adjustment nut on the cable adjuster. The emergency brake system is covered in the shop manual, sounds like the steel cable from the pedal to the cable adjuster is binding, or hanging up. If the car will not move, try backing it up in reverse gear - sometimes this will back off the rear primary shoes enough to allow you to move the vehicle.
In any case, you should check the complete system and adjust, lube or repair accordingly. :TU:
