my gas gauge is stuck on 1/4 tank, sometimes it bounces but mostly stuck i checked the ground and nada. I shake the back of the car (to slosh gas around) and the needle goes crazy... so I have concluded its probably the sending unit, now where do I get one???? if no one makes one can I get a repair kit? I cant have my car down for a week or two waiting on someone else to rebuild this thing.

    thanks

Well from the sounds of it, your float is probably either saturated or is rusted out and has a hole in it and is full. You'll have to drop the tank, take the sending unit apart (good time to clean the crud at the top of the tank) and check the float. Then you can also check the voltage coming from the unit at various levels to see if it's actually working right or if it's the dash gauge. While you have the tank out check the condition of all the hoses and the wires and of course the ground. Try and have the tank as empty as possible, remember that every gallon you have in that tank adds quite a bit of weight to it...(ask me how I know...)

do you know if they make rebuild kits for these things? I have to drive this thing from houston to so cal in a few weeks and call me crazy I would like to have a working gas gauge lol. Ive already checked all the wires and replaced all the hoses i was thinking the float sank too... do I just put a dab of silicon on the float or???

Silicon probably won't hold, the gas would chew it up pretty fast, you'd probably end up soldering it if it's brass. If it's neophrene or some type of plastic you might be SOL. As far as I know there are no direct Buick replacement floats available, but I don't see why a Chevy sourced unit wouldn't work. (Say something out of a late 60s Impala, which is probably still being made somewhere) I'd start doing a bit of research online and see who makes replacement sending units for B and C body GM cars, they must be all the same, they used the same tank on all of them...

I was thinking the impala should be the same, can anyone verify this? Id like to be sure before I drop the tank on my daily driver lol. maybe someone is parting a car and can sell me the old sending unit for comparison?

    thanks

Send it to Tri Star for a rebuild. Turn around is quick.

ok, so my have a decent system in my car and my capacitor kept shutting off my stereo because it was getting too much juice, turns out the voltage regulator is bad, so I replace it and BAM! the gas guage works!!!!!!! Im not sure how but it does......
