    Hey Guys,
I currently have a GS400 with the original auto trans & I was wondering if an original 1967 Muncie M214 speed would be a good tranny to put in. I would use this with a 400 motor to start with but will eventually go to a 455 later down the road. If I'm eventually going to go with a 455 should I go with a newer tranny or will the 1967 tranny work the same. I found one for sale for $350. Is this a good price. Probably needs rebuilt. One last thing is where can I get the original boot & console for this conversion. Is there a repop or after market one. Also am I just better of with the auto? I feel like a stick is more suited for racing & doing burnouts.
    Thanks,
    Josh

  2. the stock type parts are going to be very tough to find for a conversion to manual trans. and as far as racing and burnouts i feel the auto is better suited. I had a 70 GS455 4 speed with a well built 455 and I felt an automatic would have made the car much easier to race at the track and with the right engine burnouts are a piece of cake. that switch pitch 400 in your 67 now is a very desirable transmission.

The old Muncies are relatively weak. Often the case is no longer worth reusing. I would use a new aftermarket 5 speed in order to get overdrive.

There are no repro consolettes for your car. You will have to go with an original factory unit.

Depending on the trans you choose, this will be a $3-5K conversion.

I did a convertion last year. Heres what i did. I had a auto with buckets and console, i dont like the look of the 70 4 speed consolets, and did not want to hunt for one, so i just went with no console. Go with a after-market 5 speed, why do all that work and not have over-drive. Autos are better for racing, to do a burnout with a manual, you need to install a line-lock. 4 speed cars have a WOW factor and are funner to drive. No one looks in the interior of a car, and says WOW it has a automatic. Just my 2 cents Kelly
