I purchased a 66 GS and have not had it delivered yet. I always assume no posi. I see a lot of ads selling posis and posi/axles sets for "68-72" BPO's. I've also seen the 67's seperated. Can someone enlighten me on what my options will be? Do I need to wait and get it home and start counting splines, etc?

If you go in the parts for sale section there a real inexpensive 66 posi rear end for sale. Hurry up and grab it. It'll cost you a grand or two to set up your rear. Grab the on for sale cheap and be done with it!! Then you can put your money elsewhere.

FYI I think the 64 65 and 66 are the same size. The 67 is a dog all to itself and the 68 to 72 are the same as well.

    Good luck.

1966 Skylark Posi is coded different from the GS models... the GS had Fatter Axles the 67 is the same length but the coil spring mounts are differnt than 66...66 you have a nut and bolt that hold the spring on the axle tubes

here are the codes for 66

    Skylark Gran Sport

    Code Code

Std .Axle P.T. Axle Std Axle P.T Axle
    2:78 LA LN OA OP
    2:93 OB OW OE OX
    3:08 LB LO - -
    3:23 LC LP - -
    3:36 LD LR LJ LX
    3:55 - ON - OR
    3:90 - OO - OS
    430 - - - OT

    - = not avail
the code is stamped on the drivers side axle tube on the bottom middle ..might need a scuff pad to wip off mild rust ,dirt, ect..

ok I cant do the chart like i wanted...so the first codes are for skylark std axel then posi Traction the second set is for Gran Sport Std and PT

Aftermarket posi center sections are avail from Eaton and Auburn. Your best bet is to contact Monzaz on this board. He knows the Buicks well and will give you excellent pricing.:TU:

Jim how much to get a 10 bolt open rear, then get a posi unit, then the ring and pinion, then an installation kit, and some kind of a c clip eliminator and assemble. Then you need the axle and pinion seals and then finally clean and paint, new brakes and a girdle cover? You saying you can do all this for under $1000??:beers2:

I'm pretty sure all the BOP 8.2's are bolt in axle Joe. No stinkin C clip eliminators needed:laugh:

Thanks all. I will be noting names and such and putting it in the resto book. I bought this car off Craigs List here in Iowa sight unseen. For $1100. It's a bucket seat console 66GS and that is my favorite year. Then it snowed.... and snowed so I am looking at picking it up in March or April. Seller is a great guy, he goes back and forth to Iraq. Normally my favorite cars are a long way away. He said he had offers for parts but my offer was the only one from a Buick guy intent on restoration.

It's complete, rusty but straight with a nailhead in there. I will sort it out in April.

I am just assuming it has an open rear end. I don't score many cars with posis. Will keep updated.

    Hey Jimmy,

It's black with black interior but I don't think it will stay black. My 72 Centurion 2 door is triple black and I am not sure I want 2 black cars. The Centurion has to stay triple black because it's rare.

My favorite 66 color is red. I've seen some red 66's that were buffed out and wow they really pop.

Her said he was going to do the work. It will be well under 1000.00

No one said we were using a T/A girdle cover. That is the same cost on any rear in the worls 150.00 right off. lol.

    Posi Auburn 399.00
    gears BOP 229.00
    bearings 79.00
Axle bearings 65.00 sealed / 69.00 non sealed
    blast prime and paint 75.00

Axles are already bolt in for any BOP from 64-72 rear even some 73 74 75 have bolt in axles.

EVEN with the 150 t/a cover i am just under 1000.00 YOUR COST. :)

So I would say the answer is YES as long as you assemble it.

IF you want to save some money you might be able to skip the axle bearings and seals till you get more money down the road. They are externally bolt in and can be change with the fluid and rear cover still intact. :) Jim

Good luck guys, Remember I am here to help you out...I am on your side...I am a car guy too. :):3gears: :3gears: :3gears:

Jim thats awsome!!!:TU: I just asumed he was going to be dragging with this car. My bad.

FYI, I just acquired a nice 8.5 in 10 bolt , drum to drum, and will be needing a spool with some other parts so i'll be in touch for sure Jim.

Thanks for looking out for us guys.:beers2:
