After 15 years of pretty much driving on the frame, I took my 1966 Special Deluxe in for front end rebuild. New Shocks, bushings etc. One week later I replaced an old steering column that I was able to get off the site. It has been about six months since the work and I have a shimmie in the front end that is driving me crazy. Could this be the steering column or should I take it back to the shop and have them check things out? Its hard to explain but after I make a turn, the steering wheel will shimmie as it makes it way back to to center. It also feels like the whole front of the car is moving back and forth. o No:
My first reaction is that some shims used in the allignment fell out. If all the ball joints were not replaced then I would look there. If you put the car on a lift suspending it by the frame, you will likely be able to move the front suspension by the wheels and see where the problem lies.
I have a 67 Skylark, and I've had an Upper A-arm bolt break and do something similar to what you describled. I'm referring to one of the bolts that holds the alignment shims in place. I think it might either have been overlooked and not tightened by the alignment shop, or sheared off. But that's where your problem is leading me to think of. -Josh
Thanks Guys, it sounds like I'm heading back to the shop to get everything checked out. All ball joints were replaced. Fortunately should not be out of pocket expense. Thanks again!
is when you hit a bump or just driving in generally rag joint could be bad and cause issues over bumps also how are the tires a broken belt can do that too and be more noticable on rebuilt front jsut some ideas if the rest of the front checks out
Rag joint is used. I have a new one but just put in the used column and used the rag joint attatched to it. I really notice it when driving generally. Thanks for the info. Kirk :beer
