    I have a 1965 Wildcat Convertible with a 401 and ST400.
I want to get my Carter AFB rebuilt and need to know what kit I should source for it. The tag on the carby has no numbers on it. I'm guessing it was rebuilt years ago and the old tag scrapped.
CARS have kits listed as quoted below.
Any tips on which should suit my Wildcat and why so many variations?

    1963-1966 With 401 engines. 4GC 4BBL. Numbers: 7023040,
    7023143, 7024040, 7025040, 7025140, 7026040.

Look for a number stamped on the left side front of the base, should be 4053 if it is the original Carter AFB, but it may have been changed out over the years. Anyway, that is where to find the number to ID the carb, which will tell you which kit to get.

The 4GC is a Rochester carb, which was also original equipment on some Buicks from 63-66. The other numbers 7023040, etc are specific models of the Rochester--generally changed every year and was different for car with automatic vs manual trans.

A kit for a Rochester won't fit your Carter!

I have a Carter Carb. Kit Book from 1977 that says you should use Carter Zip Kit Number 902-185B. Not sure if you can still buy that kit. The numbers listed on the Cars website is for Rochester carbs.

I would say call them and see if they can help you. You could always check with some local parts places also. If you get more part numbers you might find it on eBay for less money.

    Good Luck,

I guess it would have helped if I had quoted the right details:Dou: :Dou:

These are the numbers I meant to quote from CARS and yes 4053 is in there.

    Carter Carburetors
    1961-1967 4BBL. Numbers: 3088, 89, 3297, 3578, 79,3633, 35,
    65, 3826, 27, 3921, 22, 23, 4053, 54, 55, 56, 59, 60, 61, 4179,
    80, 81, 4331, 32, 44, 4453. (Carter AFB 4BBL).

I checked my Carter AFB and found 3921 S on the front of the base near the Auto Choke (on the left side looking from the front of the car)
I see 3921 is also in the above list so I guess that's the kit I want.
My carby seems to be original and looks identical to those shown in the shop manual.
Not sure of the difference between 4058 and 3921 so if anyone is able to tell me, please do.

The one book I have list that number (3921) as 65 Buick. That is all is says about it. So it sounds like the original Carb.

The kit from Hygrade is # 283D and will fit many of the AFB's used on our Buicks.
It's avail from Car Quest, and online at www.rockauto.com for $17.

GP Sorensen kit #96-117D is listed on www.autozone.com for $17.

I had lo luck getting a kit from NAPA, but they do have individual parts like needle/seats, and the main gasket. Those are great the have for spares.:TU:

Appologies if you have sourced parts/kits for your carb already but you could try Daytona Spares , they offer a complete rebuild service (looks very nice quality as well) for most common makes of carb.
