    Bill,

Thanks for posting back. I would definitely be interested. Checked pics, looks clean. I read good condition, would It need rebuilt? Please let me know if it ends up being available. I done a carb kit on my 2barrel, but needs bushing job on throttle shaft, out of my area. Ran good after, but leaks fuel around shaft, too much play. I would probably use one of the guys that has been recommended on here.

    Thanks , Michael

    Walt,
Thanks for info. Is that a direct fit on everything?

My appologies, I have a stock 340 2bbl with duals.
I was listing the other things as ideas or options people have given me as to how to freshen up the engine I have without going overboard.
I'm in the same boat as you, I picked up my skylark last September having never though I'd own a Buick (But I'm glad I did!). I've got a 4bbl 340 intake and carb on the way for a swap.

I've had people suggest sending the heads out to Gessler for porting if you want it done right. I won't be doing anything other than the manifold swap for now due to the budget.

    Thanks,
With the duals, are the stock exhaust manifolds decent? I have heard that they were almost like a header.
Most of the dual kits I found are header back. One kit that is to manifolds is 2.25.
I have the manifold, still sourcing the 4GC carb. Checking listing BillA has on here. Planning rebuild with one of the recommendations I saw here.
Are modifications necessary swapping from 2v to 4v (linkage etc.)
    DEFINITELY plan on having fun:TU:

Thanks for clarifying that list. I'm hoping to be able to "freshen up" mine too for now, and enjoy driving this summer while I go through brakes, cooling system, tires, shocks, coil springs,.... a little at a time.

I've heard that as well. I have the stock manifolds on my car right now aftermarket kit bolts right up to them. I'm pretty sure mine is 2.25" or 2.5" (since its a lot smaller than my Brother in law's 3" on his Firebird) previous owner also had cut-outs installed pre-muffler, I haven't ran it with them off but my brother was fooling around with it one day and set all the car alarms off on the street. :spank:

I believe Sanderson makes a decent set of shorty headers, but I'm not aware of anyone making a set of Full length headers (this being for the 340, i could be completely wrong for the 300)

I don't know if we are allowed to paste e bay listings on here, but I saw some headers for 300 & 340 that look longer to me than typical shorties, ceramic coated $475
I would gladly pass it on if it is OK.

It fit my '66 well. The AFB has a hot-air choke, so you'll have to convert to an electric choke for your '64.

    OK to post links here!
Poston Enterprises made the 300-340 headers. Too bad they went out of business a few years ago.

That would be the ones. Just hadn't had a chance to try to post it. I was picturing block huggers when someboby mentioned shorty headers. (Temporary Mind Meltdown)

Yes, there is nothing wrong with leaving the manifolds and using a good dual exhaust... For a street car the difference would be minimal from adding headers... More so the headers add extra issues like it is harder to change the starter, sometimes you need to re-locate the trans lines etc.

I have headers on my truck and they sound great, and boost my MPG by about 1.5, as well as give me about 20 HP. The downside is I curse and swear every time I have to change spark plugs or bolt the headers to the engine. Speaking of which I am almost ready to fight with my headers as I added a new engine.

You're talking full tube headers not shorties correct?
I can't speak for what it would be like on any other car, but I know with dodges even the short tube headers make the drivers side plugs difficult to reach.

Yeah, I know what you mean with other issues with headers. Had a '72 Chevy Cheyenne PU years back. 350/350 a/c, the works. Put headers and fought them constantly getting loose, leaking, burning plug wires, hard to work on other stuff, even seemed like I had more under hood heat problems especially to the starter.

Do you happen to know what size the original exhaust tubing is coming off the manifolds? Appreciate the input.

OOOOOOK, here goes from the old fossil....:laugh:I owned a 64 coupe for 15 years that I built into a 64 GS by taking it to 65 GS specs.... When I bought it it had the 300 two barrel engine and trans.... The trans you have now is a switch pitch that has gotten scarce over time and is pricey.... not a power glide,,, different trans, much tougher than a glide.... the diff is usually a peg leg with a ratio of 2.93 or so... one of the best things you can do is go to a posi with a lower gear....
Go to the wrenchin secrets thread and check out my list of cheap tricks there,,, I have done all those to a 64 lark and they really work for not much money....:Smarty: install a set of heavy duty shocks, wider tires, and lower the weight of the car as much as possible,,,, there is nearly 100 lb of sound deadner stuff under the carpets and in the trunk, remove it,,, it gets moisture under it and rusts the floor out.... remove it...
I had all the engines that I could get my hands on in my car,,, 300 two barrel,,, 300 ''optional'' 4 barrel ,,, 401 nailhead,,, and a 442 stage 2 [ 430 Buick bored to 442 in.]....
I raced more, won more , and broke less with the 300 engine than all the others.... the nailhead was the toughest, most reliable street engine and was beaten only 2 times in 4 years of street racing... but because the car was a 64 not a 65, I had to run a much higher class at the strip.... and with the stage engine, sky was the limit,,, usually wound up in the gas classes, or hot rod classes....too hot for the street and not hot enough to win every time at the strip.... but it was a bear, would pick the wheels up back when that was unheard of....except for the funny cars....all said and done,,, as I look back,,, I should have stayed with the 300 and refined , refined, refined it in G/stock/automatic class,,,, the car was a favorite with the people, when I returned from a run the people would stand and clap,,, and come by the pits and visit... everybody wanted something besides a chevy to root for....
Sean gave you a good plan,,,, and my list of tricks is a good plan,,, be REALLY CAREFULL IF YOU DECIDE TO DO THE DOC DUAL PLANE MOD ON THE INTAKE BECAUSE THAT INTAKE HAS WATER JACKETS THAT SURROUND THE CARB AND YOU CAN GRIND THROUGH.....it can be done but you really have to be carefull.... if you decide to do that, get with me and we will discuss it....
Yep the factory exhaust manifolds are in fact as good as shorty headers.... just port match them to the heads.... and put bigger exhaust pipes THAT ARE THE SAME SIZE ALL THE WAY TO THE BACK BUMPERS.... buick did not do that...
The carter carb is a very good one for that engine, but dont tell John Codman that I said that,,,, personally , I would put a 600 to 750 holley on it with vac secondaries.... btw on modding the manifold,, increasing the size of the bores does a lot.... so the intake does restrict it some....
recurve the dist.... lot of cheap power .... cold air pkg... lot of cheap power,,, use a low restriction air cleaner and come off the windshield wiper chamber for the cold air.... pm me....
