I have the opportunity to pick up a complete 1960 401 engine that spins but I haven’t tried to start it. It’s been sitting 20+ years. Not something I usually mess with but I hate to see it get scrapped. Looking to get an idea of the value and potential demand.

    Hi,

Seen them anywhere from a few hundred bucks to a grand, also depends upon how complete it is. Manifolds distributor carb air cleaner.

Would be worth more if running.

Only bad about a 1960 is it probably came with a dynaflow, so will need a adapter for using a th/st400 but there are aftermarket bellhousings to use newer transmissions. Also some had a slightly different starter mount as a friend went through several to get the one to fit his 1960.

Post a location as sure many might want a spare especially not locked up is a plus.

    Regards,
    Jim

Thanks for the info. Didn’t know about the bell housing difference. I’m going to see if I can get the price down a little. It’s in a 60 Electra 225 4dr HT and probably about to get crushed.

Dynaflow starters reach deeper into the bellhousing as the starter gear is on the torque converter. The ST400 transmissions have the starter gear on the flexplate.
