Paul, I can remember a system like that being advertised in jcwhitney's catalog several years ago. I think I still have one in my junk somewhere. Theirs didn't use a compass though , it used some kind of little gage that the needle just swung from side to side.

I guess it detects a magnetic field around the area.

Hey 'Buick Borracho', I've had the same issue years ago with my '58 Special and although I didn't want to at first... I went to an alternator and Pertronix electronic ignition set-up and boy... Best thing I ever did. I purchased everything from JC Whitney, followed the directions and she starts and runs sooo muuuch nicer.
I just wanted to give ya' my two cents...:Brow:

Guess wot, I'm having the same problem, was at a car show with my 55 Buick, got there no problem...end of the day just as I was getting ready to leave, car won't start, flat battery...when I finally got home I tried the spare battery I have and it started no problem but for some reason I am getting no headlights only sidelights....and the ignition light is on behind the grill when the ignition is in the off position?

Not sure what is causing this...:Do No:

Investigate that ignition light. To the best of my knowledge there is no such ignition light on a Buick of this era. Either that's an under hood light that's always on ( thus the drain problem) or you got a fire under there.:eek2:
