I would not do that. The correct or a little bigger cables with good connections, Delco series 24, a stock starter and everything should be more than adequate. If you decide to chage something go to an aftermarket high torque starter.

    Hi Guys,

Rich...I've had absolutely no problems using the TurboStart 3-post 16V battery in my '70 GS 455 conv. It's been in there since 1998! There are several things that need to be done to make it work but it can be done and be quite reliable IMHO.

I use the 16V to energize my starter, ignition and electric fuel pump. The 12V side powers everything else that uses 12V.

To use the 3-post requires that you purchase the Voltage Step-Up box. Jeg's & Summit both carry these. This will allow a standard 12V altenator to charge the 12V, or first 6 cells and the step-up box then does just that and charges the other 2 cells. This also allows the use of a regular 12V battery charger.

I've have also installed a Ford type remote solenoid so that the 1/0 welding cable that I use for battery cable is not "hot" all the way the entire length of the car.

I purchased a Mad Enterprises battery relocation kit to move it to the trunk. I also custom made my own brackets that then bolt to the Mad E.'s battery box frame so that everything is right there and convienent.

This "swap" does require quite-a-bit of wiring to make work but once it's done...it's a killer set-up!:TU:

Here are a few pic's of my set-up....
