A car that weighs 3300 lbs or less and it's really easy with only a mild buildup of a 455 with a 413 cam and about 11 to 1 pistons and a good set of heads, well ported iron or aluminum, SP1 intake and about a 950 or so Holley carb.
I got into the 10s (10.40 to 10.80 depending on the day/track) with an almost full weight GS (3700 lbs) with 10.6 comp, hyd SP4 Lunati cam, ported iron heads, B4B, Thermoquad, 4.10 gear, 8 in 4200 conv, and some fine tuning. Fully streetable. Really not a whole lot of $$$. Less than 8K in the whole deal (car included). (10 yrs ago, though) Bruce
Not to highjack this thread, but I would be interested in any info you could provide about that SP4 cam. Was it the old version or the new one? How high did it idle? Do you know how good your heads were flowing? I've thought about going with that cam, but I don't know if it would be too much. The combination I was thinking about was 464- home ported iron heads, SPX intake, 950 holley, headers, 4.10's, 3500 stall. I was looking for 10.80's to 11.20's in a 69 GS at about the same weight as yours was. ________ Smoking While ****ing
I believe it was 253/270 so that would be the later one. Ran stock 70 alum rockers. I had to do some carb and dist mods to get a decent low idle (800 in gear). Not exactly the best for sitting at backups on the Jersey Turnpike but it wasn't unbearable. Heads flowed 264/190 at .500 (28 in vac) Bruce
Is it still possible to buy a SP4 cam? I ran that cam through my DeskTop Dyno in my engine with good compression and liked the numbers. Maybe I don't NEED aluminum heads to go low 10's.
I went into the 10.90's with 3500 lb car, stock rods, 12 to 1 compression, mildly ported iron heads, 308s cam, 3.73 gears and a garbage 3500 stall converter. Its definitely alot easier and less painful getting into the 11's, but the 10's does require spending some money and doing your homework.
I went 10's with junk 3950 lbs ( EZ/S )...std bore 455 stock 70 pistons TA 210s cam 67 big port heads,then 462 hypereutectics (9.?:1) with 308s...and nitrous...fish
Stock Rods, home ported heads, forged pistions, and a Procharger D1SC with about 10psi in a full weigh car. Pump gas, street tires, 3.31 gears and a VP converter. Haven't hit 10's yet but will this year tune is on just waiting for track to open.
Man you guy's forgot to tell him the most important thing :Smarty: TURN OFF THE AC!!!!!!! :spank: Mike
