10" tires / 10 second car

    Can anyone out there give me some clues on how to make my 68 GS stick to the track. So far my best is a 10.72 @ 125 with a 1.56 60 ft. and it's spinning. My only mods so far are s.s. bars and comp engineering 3 way adjustables on the fornt and rear. Theres no way i can get a bigger tire on it than the already 28X10's . Any suggestions?

    I used to race a 68 Skylark and I will try to relay some of the stuff I went through to run 10.60's and 1.40s short time. I replaced the rear bars with home made ones that were adjustable. I raised the mounting point on the rear axle 1 1/8" from stock. The arms had hard bushing at all points. I tried several springs including Moroso front and rear but found they did not work for my car. I went to a parts store and had a friend look through the spring catalog and found a set for the front for a 68 Chevelle with a 6 cyl. engine and no accessroies. The rear springs were for a similar vehicle. I used the same shocks as you have front and rear. I used air bags in the rear with the right side at 25-30 psi and the left at 7-10 psi. I set the pinion angle at 0 to 1 degree down. I used M/T 12.50 / 30 ET Streets. My car weighted 3450 with me in it.

    Hey Mike
    I talked to ya at Mason Dixon a few weeks ago. First of all go to a good track. There is a world of difference between Mason Dixon, 75/80 (RIP) and sticky tracks like MIR, Cecil, Maple Grove, Norwalk, etc.
    That being said, I would recommend the HRPARTSnStuff rear bar. Takes the twist out and allows you to let the air out of the airbags for more weight transfer.
    Maybe try a tighter converter. I only have a 4200 but can't hook at Mason Dixon half the time. WE HAVE TORQUE!

    One last thing slicks: I recommend Phoenix or fresh Good Years. MTs were not nearly as good. In 40 passes I hooked maybe 10 times. Put Phoenix back on and reverse. Hooked 30 out of 40 passes.

    This is true but a sloppy track is not going to work for Tom either. He runs at national events where the track is right.
    I've never turned a tire at a NSCA race. Great prep.

    I had 30x9 hoosiers box control arm cheap 3 way shocks h/r sway bar front moroso spings and when 1.41 bunch of times even a small 1/8 track up in maine i have gone 1.42 but is was never consistent if it was nice cool fast weather and I left hard it would blow the tires off like a top fueler....the ladder bars so far as hooked all but once and it just shock 'em a little but still went 1.44 and it went 1.42 7 times before that but it was 2600' above sea air so I can't wait to see what happens when the air is around 100' that will be the test...but when the car was at 3700 and ran 10.70's it hooked good with the control arms

    up until it started getting really warm, the car wasn't leaving too bad, but now it's spinning sideways when i leave. I'm running Hoosiers now Bruce, is Goodyear or Phoenix a softer compound? I haven't had a chance to see my car leave, but it doesn't feel all that twisty like the awsome Bquick buick used to be before the big sway bar, plus i'm not even using airbags.That was my next option. I have noticed that Dubuick(nice car, looks just like mine!) and Bruce have a common factor in the sway bar, i wonder if thats the ticket?

    Actually the Hoosiers I've run were softer compound than the Goodyear or Phoenix but the whole compound chemistry is different. Worked better than the MTs for me but the Phoenix gets super sticky and is hard to get off the car. Stays gooooey.
    Are your tires pretty fresh? I can't keep tires from one season to the next and get them to fully work.
    Is your front sway bar on? If it's off I would expect alot of twist esp without airbags. Maybe there is binding. Try an old stocker trick. Loosen the control arms some front and rear and double nut or use lock nut.

    Also, add some pinion angle. I like 3 deg down.

    The tires are new this spring, and the front sway bar is off, and the pinion angle is 2 deg up. Is there any other way to change the angle w/o adjustable uppers?

    I your looking for traction with adjusting pinion angle, your barking up the wrong tree. Pinion angle does nothing but save the ujoints. How you adjust for bite is instant center location.

    the rear sway bar just made it so the rear drivers tire stayed on the track and the car didn't take a right turn when it took off....I run a soft compound but i don't know what the differents is???????I know they don't last to long... but the hard compound tire seems like the sidewall goes away first...

    Pinion angle that is off will not be as efficient. You want it slightly down so that it will be close to zero on launch. It will hit the tires harder due to better application of the power. Slicks like a certain amount of "hit".
    4 speed and trans brake racers know what I'm talking about.

    My car left quite differently going from -2 deg to + 3deg.
