I thought that '65-'70 cars all got the 9 3/8" axle, but I am looking at this '70 electra, which appears to have a 10 bolt, could anyone confirm from this picture? I was going by the number of bolts on the cover. http://torquemonster.homedns.org/~lid8txy/70electra/Gas tank and Rear Axle.JPG Also - does anyone know if the axle from a '70 electra would fit under a '65? Thanks!
9-3/8 rears had 10 bolt covers from 66 or 67 to `70. 12 bolt covers after that. You would have to take some measurements for a `65 transplant, I am assuming it will be close. I know my `65 Electra rear has the type of rear that does not have a rear cover, but I think it is still a 9-3/8. P.S. the picture wasn't helpful, just going by what would have been in a `70 Electra
Yes-the 'drop out' rear ended in '65 with '66 the start of the 'integral' rear with a 10 bolt cover. There is always some confusion as it's the ring gear that has 12 bolts. The '70 rear may fit under the car, but there will likely be driveshaft length issues at the least-good luck
Scott: I'm very familiar with 69-70 9 3/8" big car rear-ends, don't really know about pre-69 units. These rear ends have a 10-bolt cover, but the differential is actually a 12-bolt. In other words, 10-bolts outside, 12-bolts inside. They are very strong and replacement parts are almost impossible to find. Also- the cover on these rears are more "square" shaped that round. Hard to tell from your picture, but that cover looks round to me... Hope this helps... Paul II
Are the gears different than the other 12 bolts GM used? Are they as hard to find as other replacement parts?
