Martin I didnt use any vaseline in my pump. Just make sure that the gears are lubed with engine oil, then use a drill to prime the engine before startup. Well thats how I did it.. and it worked out fine. You can call me if you have questions. Jan // 070-7384233
Thank you Jim! :beers2: I agree and it makes perfect sense. I posted something like this once and people probably thought I was an idiot.
The point is, you always want to verify that you will have oil pressure upon startup. Having a good mechanical oil pressure gauge and priming tool/drill. I always try spinning the pump with a drill first. You can always pack the pump if you have to.
Whoa, this thread got a lot of replies fast. AFAIK vaseline *is* the name of the product here in Sweden (it's called "vaselin" though) and not a brand name. And I do have a priming tool from TA that I got earlier this week (haven't had a chance to blog about it yet) that I will use to prime the engine. I also have an Autometer mechanical pressure gauge. As for the type of vaseline you can put on your lips - I really don't think it's the same type you use to lube up the rusty bicycle. Thanks for all the replies and help - very much appreciated as I know that proper oiling is cruical. :TU:
I remember when I worked in a repair shop, one of the mechanics I worked with was looking in one of the drawers of my toolbox. He sees the jar of vaseline, and gave me the wierdest look. He told me " thats not something a man should have in his toolbox". Just the way he said it was funny. I still crack up laughing when i think about it.
I would have told him "yeah, I offer it to the customers just before you give them your bill so it don't hurt as much!" ou: :idea2:
Hey If you want I can send you a big container of it too you from the States? They make big containers of it here and it is cheap?
The directions that came with the booster plate that I just put on specifically said to pack the gears with Vaseline. I did it and it worked great.
another way to prime the oil pump, is to employ a pressurized external priming pump. remove the oil pressure sending unit and attach the hose & connector from the pressurized unit to that location. run the pump until oil pressure builds up. it alos forces oil into the rocker arms. saw it done on tv.
For the record, I didn't use any sort of petroleum jelly to prime my pump. I just tossed it together and ran the drill. It was primed almost immediately.
