Picking up a ready to assemble engine..30 over block, crank, rods, forged pistons, and a TA 288 cam, and ported iron heads. Will be running a SP-1 and Holly 950 hp carb. Going into a approx 3900 lb car, built turbo 400, 3200 stall, into a 9 inch with 3.70s, 275-60-15 drag radials. May or may not try a 1” spacer depending on getting a fiberglass hood. My goal is 11.50-11.90s. Realistic with this setup? Possibly a bigger cam? Car will be sometimes street mostly bracket brawler. Looking forward to your feedback. Thanks!
I'm no expert but it will have to be really dialed in, not just engine and trans, to get into the mid 11s with iron heads. How's the suspension setup?
Hard to say without the compression ratio. I would guess you'll need 4.11s and more converter to get the 11.50
Right now it sucks, but have a plan over the winter to get it together. I have hotchkin tubular up front. Going to remove the rear bar, and go with the HT rear bar, and sometyoe of 70-30 shock up front.
Then you better consider Dynamic compression as well. You say ported iron heads. Your goals will depend, at least partially, on how good the heads actually are.
The flow sheet i’ve seen show 253 at 500 lift. Future plans include upgrading to TA stage 1 heads if they are ever available. That’s why i wonder if my cam choice is good or if it would need to be upgraded when heads become available.
There are 4 different TA cams starting with TA 288. What is the ACTUAL static compression, and which TA 288?
Pumpgas with that is not impossible, but you do need to figure out exactly what you have. I have an iron headed BB that is 11:98:1 and I drive it everywhere on 93 pumpgas. I will mix it 50/50 for the track. Timing locked at 34 total and a start retard. Solid roller.
I agree....you can drive it around with 93 but don't get into it much. Mix 93 and 110 at the track. Or....run 28deg total timing and run 93. The difference in power from 32deg to 28 is not as much as many think.....
my plans as of now is to have Stage One Automotive in NJ assemble the motor. They seem to be the closest place I’ve found within reasonable driving distance. I want to be sure it’s done right the first time and am maximizing my combo.
You did not mention any fuel system up grades which will likely be needed to sustain the hp level to get to your ET goals.
If it's 10 to 1 compression it will go in the 11's I've done it. Most on here have done it too. If Rob is assembling it at stage 1 he will tell you everything you need as he has done plenty of combos in that range as well. John jr
Nothing over the top needed.....rob MC pump or electric....1/2in line preferred...3/8 will be marginal Baffled tank..done
back from my 6 hour road trip. The cam is a TA 288-92H. I posted the head flow sheet. Gotta get some OT so I can score a set of roller rockers. Pretty excited by what i have so far. Spoke to a fellow Buick racer, and he seems to think I should be able to hit my goal.
Not 100% what that head sheet is saying for flow but good iron heads will do it. That cam has barely any spread between I/E duration and was meant more for Stage 2 head but not bad. Depending on those heads if you get good air at a good track you should do it. Good electric pump out back will do the trick with 3/8" lines. Good air day got me an 11.39@115.99, mediocre air 11.43@115.41. Just about everything is a little more than you except SP1 and 10.4:1 with Speed Pro pistons plus Gessler iron heads, Howards 235I/242E/110 LSA cam, 3.90's, 3500+ stall, 1000 Thermoquad around 3950 lbs with me in it. 2.5" exhaust. You're on the east coast so you should do it.
