Which Points Eliminator Kit?

Since Dave Ray is no longer producing his HEI mods for our stock distributors I'm looking at both the Accel and the Lectric Limited kits. The Accel is a Hall Effect using a 3wire output and the Lectric Limited uses only one wire and can't be told from stock without looking inside the distributor. Both use stock type coils and the factory resistive wiring that provides 12 volts at start-up, dropping down to about 8 volts when running. (I do understand the technology between the two).

So, I'm looking for feedback from users of either one or both before deciding on which way to go. Since my approx. 500 HP build will be totally stock appearing I'm inclined to want the Lectric Limited but am open to why the Accel might be better. I'll add that my in-dash factory tach has to work with either one which I believe it will.

I've been installing the one wire system for close to 20 yrs. now when I rebuild/re-curve distributors. Have only had to replace one in this time.

Per our local distributor expert Pat Mason,(MRI) who has set up several distributors for us, the one listed above is excellent. We have had no issues with it.

I'm intrigued by the Progressive Ignition set up theyve been discussing here the last couple days.. other than that, I've been very happy with the three cars I've got running on Pertronix III's..

If my car wasn't already converted to a full time 12V feed, I would have gone with the Lectric Limited kit, after reading everyone's feedback on it.

The Pertronix kits are nice, and seem to work fine when running and driving the car down the road, but running an engine on the dyno has shown otherwise. I have seen this multiple times with the Pertronix units. The spark signal starts to get sketchy. Again, something you probably won’t notice just driving around, but if you are trying squeeze performance out of it,you will be missing some.

I was looking into the Pertronix III but have been told that it requires a full 12 volts instead of the resistive wire 8 volts and that it won't drive my in-dash factory tach properly.
I'm also intrigued by the Progressive Ignition but, at 5 times the cost of the others, I'm not sure it's 5 times better.

He has used the Accel conversion. I don't know if he has used the Lectric Limited one-wire kit.

You must remember that the 1 wire unit will not work with any other ignition upgrades. I believe you can use it with a rev limiter but not any other upgrades.

My 69 was converted to pertronix with a newer coil , larger wires connecting to the coil + one wire alternator.. Car sits most of the time and subsequently floods easily.Have become quite good at pulling plugs having had to do it so Many times. There has to be something better.

Since this motor will be totally stock appearing I don’t plan any ignition upgrades as long as it’s functional and accurate to about 6000 rpm.

Lectric Limited. Easy install, no mods needed, works great. Todd sells them.

  14. Just put this Pertronix # 1181 in my 1963 Oldsmobile F-85 Deluxe with a 215 Rockette All Aluminum V8. Starts right up! I have also used the Malloy Unilite in the past, but like the Pertronix better.

If you're not high revving the stock point distributor will be more than adequate. I've converted many cars to HEI or some other points elimination kit. At this point I see little value in it. While points require maintenance they are very reliable and setting the dwell takes about 3 minutes. A high quality point and a decent coil is hard to beat. Some folks seem to think its almost a requirement to upgrade away from points but I see no reason. None that I've converted run or start any easier or had a noticeable seat of the pants hp improvement. Ironically the uprgade kits seem to have a high failure rate.

Do points burn more frequently when using a hotter coil?

No, points burn from lack of a resistance wire or ballast resistor. They can also burn from a defective condenser. Don't fall for the coil hype. Match the coil to the ignition being used.

Another option is to run an MSD box and trigger it with the points. The points will last forever as they are carrying very little current as they trigger the MSD box.

Max Damage I'm working on it!

    Or from over gapped plugs.

Points are just a mechanically actuated relay. In my line of work I and deal relayswiyh electromagnetic contactors that have similar contact pads as points and they tend to scorch as amperage draw is increased on the circuit they are energizing. Why would points be any different?

They would not be. I understand your point (HA!). I wonder what the amperage rating is on a stock point? The whole system can't be much. I believe it's only 18 gauge wire to and from the coil. It must have its limitations but I've never read or heard what it is.
