While I don’t disagree with your logic, I’m an advocate of converting and never having to think about it again. My experience with the 7 or 8 cars I’ve converted is that none have experienced any issues.

To get back to my OP, I just want whatever feedback I can get on the Accel conversion vs the Lectric Limited.

Lectric Ltd is the best one out there hands down. I don't think I have ever heard anyone have a problem with them.

2 reasons, one, the resistance wire,

    Two, the condenser,

This just a opinion..... Accel was a great product in the good old days... Today its owned by the Holley corp.... Who owns Holley? Answer a large corporation that doesn't give a damb about quality... just the mighty $$$$$$.....

I really know nothing bad about Lectric all I here is great things..... Lectric would be my choice..

    Just adding the below FWIW
There is another great brand called hot-spark those are sweet also but I don't think they make a Delco V8 unit...

Is Dave Ray "Dave's Small Body HEI?" Is (was) there a performance advantage w/that setup vs. say Lectric Limited?

I had a chance recently to buy one of Dave's Small Body HEI distributors that had never been used. Maybe I should've?

Yes, he is the “small cap HEI guy”. He was bitten by a brown recluse spider and has been recovering for quite some time. I received an answer from him last month saying he was permanently out of the business of making his distributors. I’v had two and they were great custom tuned units.

Brian, can you define sketchy? I've got an engine with a Pertronix III headed to the dyno soon, what should I be looking for ? Spark scatter or just timing that wanders..

Honestly, how often do you typically need to screw with points? Once installed and set, I don't think they would realy need to be readjusted for 10-15k miles. How long does it take to drive your GS 10k miles? I think I owned the aquamist car 17 years and I might be reaching 10k miles with it.

I've converted the aquamist car to electronic and converted it back. No real difference. The only advantage to electronic in my opinion is if you were daily driving your car and really racking up the miles

The only thing I noticed using points years ago prior to electronic conversions, was point bounce during high rpm applications. If points were getting old and spring is weakening or a cheap set of points the timing was erratic.

Do you think the HEI Dave was making (I assume would apply to std. HEI as well) added any power over the others &/or even over the points (assuming not too high rpm)?

Both Lectric Limited and Accel use a hall effect switch as the trigger.. the problematic units on the market typically are the lobe sensing ones, that attempt to use the breaker point cam to trigger off.

Been using the Accel units for a while now, the difference is one wire and $100 or so, if you ask me. I just got feedback of an apparent failure in one of those units recently, first I had heard of one of the accel units failing. Later learned that customer had wired the coil backward.. I Have been installing the one wire Lectric Limited kits since they came out with them, on true resto motors. Very few of those cars get enough drive time for the reviews to be meaningful.

I tend to agree with Joe, if you want the best reliability, stick with points.. just don't forget and sit with the key on for extended periods of time.. that is hard on them if they happen to be closed.. and use only the Blue Streak set by Standard Ignition.

To me, the only tangible benefit of the conversion kits, are those with a rev limiter built in.. but they are all the lobe sensing stuff.

What would I run in my car?.. Like Joe suggests, points distributor to trigger an MSD 6AL.. Been hiding those behind the LH front wheelhouse forever.. totally out of sight.

In my dyno an on road experiences with modifed GS's for customers in the last 20 plus years, plus my own experience going back ten years futher.. then only ignition system that provided better driveablity and cleaner plugs, with easier starts, was a CD ignition.. I have always been a fan of MSD products. The new digital stuff seems to work well, and durability has improved.. this setup will never leave you stranded.. if the MSD box fails, simply take the msd wires off the coil, and hook up your points distrib, and drive it home. To make this easier, simply make your Key on power and white wire connetions at the distributor, so the wires will be right there to hook onto the coil. Leave the resistor wire in, it does not matter to the msd, the key on trigger does not flow enough amp to make the resistor wire active.

No.. in fact coil dwell time with the HEI module was always an issue at high rpm. That is where the HEI intensifier kits come in.. I used to like Dave's mag trigger distributors. The HEI modules these days are horribly unreliable, and will leave you hoofing it just as fast as any other conversion.

It is very easy to convert one of Daves HEI distributors if you want to trigger an MSD box instead. His distributors use the same magnetic trigger whether you opt for the HEI, or the standard MSD trigger option. You just need to get the polarity right. If you look at the wires leading from the pick up, they are both black with tracers. One is black/violet, the other is black/orange. The MSD box connections are Green and Violet. All you need to remember is NEVER connect Violet to Violet. So the Black/Violet tracer wires to the Green, and the Black/Orange wires to the Violet. Then you just need to buy the MSD 8824 connector kit,

This is what I'm using inside an HEI. Only dyno time so can't speak to the reliability

I've EASILY sold over 100 of the Lectric Limited kits now and have yet to warranty any of them. They're simple but work!! And "Stock Appearing". And they work with the Factory Wiring. NO extra wires to install . . . .

I use one on my Stock Appearing Stage 1 and never had a problem in terms of performance either. (Car run's 11's)

    I have them in stock and priced below Retail . . . . https://www.stage1restoration.com/product-category/elec_ignition_kits/

I appreciate all the info from those with experience using the various ignition systems. As I think I said earlier, the weak link in the Accel unit is that cheap, brittle plastic shutter wheel. I plan to keep a spare set of points in the trunk in case that thing goes to pieces again, to prevent being stranded.

Then, based on the info in this thread I will either:

    a) Just stay with the points, if funds are limited. or
    b) Try the Davis, or Lectric Limited, or, if I win the lottery, a 6AL.

BTW, Todd's prices on LL and other parts seem really good. I wish I had ordered my vacuum advance unit from him!

I think your feedback helped me decide to use that one, though it is now marketed by FAST.

    Cool.
    The lectric kit looks interesting.
I have msd but no vacuum advance.
I need to spend a couple hours and covert back.
I found msd caps and stick points caps interchange too. I used blue streak and stock wires on msd.
New msd wires and cap made no difference.
    I use a pertronix coil w msd.
Need to check part number so I can pass it on too.
