Using Ford Solenoid for Starting

I'm going to put a Ford solenoid on the firewall to use to send power to the starter. My question is other forum says if you use PM starter you can't connect the main stud and the start terminal together because that starter will run an extra second after start up. Has anyone found this to be true?

Yes it's true! I can email you a diagram on how to wire it if you want.:TU:

I heard run the main cable from the hot side keeping it hot all the time to the starter and run the start wire from the ignition to energize the solenoid on the firewall and run a heavy wire to the start terminal on the starter from the energized side of the solenoid. I got that schematic from Nova Resource .com. That's how I will run it if I put a PM starter on it.

I just talk to a guy here that has a Chevy dirt car and an Olds drag car that both have PM starters and has always ran them with the s terminal jumped to the main on the starter and just the posi cable coming down from the energized terminal with no after run problems. He said maybe he's lucky.

I don't know what PM means, but I have an olds 455 with a mini/ gear reduction starter on it. I have used a Ford solenoid from day one on it, hooked up just like you describe, I have had no problem at all. If I do another one I will try a RobbMc.

I have mine both wired to main post with ford solenoid in the trunk. It will run slightly past the time, but no big deal really, and you get used to how to start it quickly.

OK.. What's a PM starter? Google didn't work.

Look up a starter from Autozone for a 97 pontiac with a 350. Then click on details. It says PMGR which stands for Permanent Magnet Gear Reduction. I mounted this starter on my 455 and it fit perfect on the block but I don't have the flywheel on yet to see how the teeth match up.

Ron that sounds interesting . Is that 97 Pontiac starter for a chevy motor ?

Yes here is the oem starter and the mini for a Firebird. When I get the flywheel on the 455 I will let you know if it works.

Looks like the mini starter I got from Jamie, http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?15678-mini-starters I have one of Jamie's starters on my 470. Works great.

Jamie posted on this thread, post #2.

It works great and the teeth mesh perfect. The owner works at Oreillys and got it for 95.00! Let's go racing boys!

I hear what they're talking about with the run on of the starter. It last about 2-3 seconds before it stops. But it's not grinding the flywheel. So if I leave the cable hot at all times it won't do that? That's wierd how leaving the cable hot will stop it.

You may have been able to sort it out from the later posts, but if not, PM = Permanent Magnet. These starters use magnets for the stator instead of electromagnets, so they draw many amperes less during starting. I have one in my '70 Chevy 3/4T truck with a 400 BBC, wired as a regular starter, and have never observed the starter motor continuing to spin after the truck starts.

I put a PM in my 454 puller truck and it is fine. I will try the race car for a bit and see if I should change it back to the regular set up where the cable is live and the start wire is from the solenoid.

I had heard you need to run both the main cable, and small post wire from remote solenoid to the starter to avoid the run on. I have my starter jumped across from small terminal to main post. I don't mind the little run on it does. And I like it that the main cable has no power unless I am cranking.

Guess my first post fell on deaf ears....the run-on will destroy the PMGR starter.

Just dumb I guess Jamie. Still don't see where you said it would ruin. Can you email this wiring info to me at mark@texasextremeracing.com please?

Mark how long have you been starting yours that way in case I need to know when to trade my starter in for a new one.
