4 years or so. I do have one starter that got real slow to crank after several years.

Jamie, can you email me the solenoid wiring instructions also? My address is : sratt17@comcast.net

I went ahead and changed the wiring so the cable is hot and use the solenoid for the start wire. We will see how long it lasts the right way. Has anyone used those stock pm starters for 14 to 1 compressiong engines? Just curious if they would turn them over.

I guess I should have been clear, sorry about that.No starter should continue to run after the motor starts.
I sold one to a board member running 13:1 in a BBB sandrail with no problems.

I guess I will keep using them as long as they work.

On your diagram you show the start wire going down to the starter. Why not use a large sized wire between the 12v power and the start wire on the starter. Then when the ford solenoid is energized you will 12v to the starter and the starter solenoid will be energized.

When I had the start wire jumped to the cable at the starter the pm starter would keep running 2-3 seconds after the engine started. It wasn't grinding the flywheel but it was running. Now that I hooked it this way it starts then immediately winds down after engine start. That's what we talked about earlier. A non pm starter don't do that and can be wired that way.

What size wire from the Ford solenoid to the start terminal on the starter?

I think I used 8 OR 10 gauge, just bigger than a blue crimp terminal would handle. Had to use a yellow one. I will check when I get home.

I guess I never have noticed that on my race car.

Whats the advantage to putting a Ford solinoid in the wiring then??
