Ok first off i have a 76 pontiac ventura with a buick 350 in it and i went threw the engine re built it shaved the heads .040 did some port work and dual exhaust with a 73 sb buick quadrajet that was rebuilt and eaton posi and 3.73 gears, 14 degrees intial timing and 34 total advnace. car ran great doing 15-20 foot posi burns running great with stock cam. well just yesterday i got my gs114 cam and lifters. and had poston intake laying around well i put the gs114, lifters and poston intake on did the cam break in procedure and added a bottle comp cams cam break in stuff and tuned everything up back at 14 degrees intial and 34 total, tuned the carb its pulling about 16 pounds of vac all i could get, with the same quad that ran great, and it starts runs good has a little lope from overlap. i go to my burn out spot and it just barely skips the tires and just power loss across the board. WHERE DID MY POWER GO I SHOULD HAVE MORE!!!

Cant offer anything but my condolences.
As that kind of stuff sucks, sort of just fixed mine like that.

Sure someone will chime in soon who knows something soon.

sounds like you put the cam in retarded, as oposed to advanced ot top dead center.maybe timing chain is set that way?somethings not right. play with your timing.may go back to tdc and start advancing slowly.

when put my cam in used the chain i put in when i rebuilt it, only 2000 miles on it figured it would be ok its a cloyes set non roller, when i put the new cam in i just lined up the marks top sprocket mark at 6 o clock and bottom sprocket at 12 o clock, i dont know if the cam is post to be 4* advance?? i didnt get a little paper with it all telling me anything about the cam.

is there a diffrence in the timing sets of the gs hi comp engines and the low comp engines, timing degrees wise

good question. when i rebuilt mine i went from 8.1 to 10.1 pistons. i dont think so.put my cam in straight up timing chain same way. no issues.

So you think i should pick up a timing set with the 3 key ways and try runing in 4* advance??? i hate doing this cause to try things you gotta rip the front of the motor apart everytime, hope its worth it in the end.

You should put a degree wheel on there and see if the cam is in the right position. if you get an adjustable sprocket you will need a degree wheel anyways to get things right. The timing chain set may not be compatable with the cam you are using. Using a degree wheel will make sure you have everything right.

If you didn't degree the cam, you have no idea where it is installed, simple as that. Gotta degree it.

Poston S divider intake? If so go back to stock.

    69GS350 Just tryn to learn!

I had this same issue. Ur cam is not degreed properly. I have a ta c110 that had to go in 4 deg advanced and i put it in at 0. I had no power...were talkn like 18sec 1/4 mile. Put it in right with no tuning and droped it by like 3 seconds. I can almost gurantee ur cams in wrong.

I have used the ta 212 which is very similar to the poston 114 cam you have and I advanced mine to 4 degrees and made great power.

The best performance upgrade you can do as far as adjustment is degreeing the cam! It is even more important than ignition timing. If your valves are not operating at the right times then power will be way down. Get a degree wheel or pay a shop to degree it.

I have the same cam in my engine. After installing it, I felt that the power was missing too. I performed the power timing section and it made a huge difference. One thing I didn't do is degree the cam when I put it in (didn't know at the time I had too). Now I am thinking it wouldn't be a bad idea to pull open the engine and check to see where it is at. As far as the 4 advanced setting, how do you know to do that? I bought the cam almost 10 years ago and don't have any of the papers it came with. I suppose I can get info on it from poston. The car does appear to have quite a bit of power, but I really don't remember what it ran like before (10 years ago). It has about 20 miles on the car the past 10 years.

Most cams are ground with 4* advance. In a perfect world, you would simply align the dots on a stock gear set and that would be that. But, as we know, the world is far from perfect:grin: . When you degree a cam, you install it on the Intake center line described on the cam card. You verify that intake center line. In a case where the cam is 4* advanced, the intake center line would be the Lobe separation angle minus 4. If the LSA was 112*, the intake center line would be 108. With a multiple key way timing set, it might be necessary to use a keyway marked other than +4 to get the cam in 4* advanced. That is why it is so important to degree the cam in. That is why it isn't so simple. Google cam degreeing for a description of the procedure, or look on Yardley's website, or do a search on this board.
