Im pretty sure this has been covered but STP oil treatment ( blue bottle ) for less than $3 has all the zddp you need for breakin and oil changes. You should be able to find this on the shelf in most any parts stores.

Just trying to help people save on some cake. :TU:

Thanks for the info. I am new to this ZDDP business. Back in the 1980s when I rebuilt the engine in my GS, I put the best oil I knew of at the time in it: Mobil 1. Now I hear Mobil 1 lacks what the old motors need.

pretty much i think they ALL lack the needed zinc . except for the special ($$$) oils from like joe gibbs , edelbrock , comp , brad penn i guess , valvoline racing oil etc . yep - we sell the STP additive ( and saw the "zinc" on the label ) , just not sure on the percentage . anyone happen to know what the zinc rating is on the STP ? i guess even the once vaunted rotella oils are now also down on the zinc .

Pulled from another forum the red bottle has 1959ppm of zinc and they were informed by STP the following:

    "July 13, 2009

Thank you for contacting us about your STP Oil Treatment. We always appreciate hearing from our consumers.

Unfortunately, the amount of ZDDP in both of our oil treatments is proprietary. However, what I can tell you is that the amount in both the red bottle and blue bottle are similar. If you add either product to four or five quarts of oil, it will provide you with the same protection the older motor oils once provided. I hope this helps you.

Again, thank you for contacting us. "

hmmm - i think 1900 is pretty good , will have to check . also - eastwood just sent me another e-mail sale deal : "BLACK FRIDAYS IN AUGUST" , quite a few things , one was ZDDP @$5.99 . probably ends midnight ?
    ### edit : just looked up some zddp info - according to some "clark" info , 4 oz of zddp contains 68,000 ppm zinc and when dilutted with normal oil ( 5 qts i think ) = a mix of 5 qts of oil that contains 1700 ppm zinc . so with the STP you would have to add 4 QUARTS of STP to maintain close to 1700 ppm zinc . is my math close there ?

My question would be if STP has the amount of ZDDP to protect older engines, I would not think it could be used in the newer cars because of the damage it would cause to the cat system. After all thats why the EPA removed the zink & other additives in the first place. And of course with out letting public know about it.

i don't know if was removed because of cat damage - i think it was more due to the fact of letting trace elements of the zinc escape out the exhaust into the air that we breathe was bad . cat damage ( repairs = dealer profits ) was probably not a priority . now on my higher mileage grand cherokee ( '02 4.7 V8 106,000 ) i do add some lucas synthetic oil additive , but on my '04 monte carlo ( 64,000 ) when i did that i noticed lifter noise ? that is my concern with thicker oil additives . plus thicker oil = more work for the oil pump . a concern on some V8 buick motors similar to the HP oil pumps and kits .

From what I read the PPM given was taken from an oil sample using a newer "conventional" oil. I imagine the amount of zddp in the STP is crazy high too but its where the mixture ( oil + additive ) is at that is important.

15-50 Mobile 1 still has the zinc in it. It even says so on the bottle, I just don't know if it is enough to protect the motor. I will find out cause I used 4 qts. 15-50 and 3 qts of 10-30 Mobile 1, I have a deep oil pan.

    Hi folks,

I have always heard that the red STP has more zinc in it than the blue bottle, tho is much harder to find. I had to order mine on-line.

Still, leaving out the synthetics, what conventional oil currently sold at any given auto-parts store, or Walmart, as the highest percentage of zinc?

I've heard different suggestions as to the proper range of ZDDP content. What most people say is between 1000-1300 ppm. Mobil 1 15W-50 has 1300, but 10W-30 has only 900. The 5W-30 has even less...something like 550-600 ppm.

Adding too much ZDDP can interfere with the detergents in the oil, however, so don't over-juice it with the additive.
