Just an FYI -- I needed to ship something heavy and discovered YRC freight. I found out that YRC Freight has quite a few terminals around the country. If you ship TERMINAL to TERMINAL the prices are pretty decent. You have to transact it online because if you call, you'll have to pay more. You can get door-to-door too but you pay a lot more. I ended up having the item picked up at the sellers' door and shipped to a terminal near me - not the absolute cheapest but the best option for this item. They are a big outfit so I thought it might be better to have a company that does this for a living....
YRC shipped a Monte Carlo roof for me once. The buyer set it all up just had to palletize and strap to pallet they picked it up at my home.
They're probably the biggest LTL carrier in the country resulting from a merger bet. Yellow and Roadway years ago - Almost went under in '08-09. Interesting that they have an online portal for general public (most if not all carriers require an account be established and discounts in place). Good for them to "think" and to have better rates for terminal to terminal. Most carriers don't - Not to say no others do but I've shipped a LOT of freight & never seen where it makes a difference or even the option. You just put the zip code in to get a quote. Freightquote.com is a freight broker and also a good source for quotes (probably need to set up an account). Requires a min. weight (4k lb. for FedEx Freight & they'll check it to make sure it meets min.) &/or linear footage but yes, if it's a good lane where they're running empty trailers you can get some excellent deals. It pays to shop around. I had to return racks to a manufacturer once and YRC was dropping empty trailers at their location (I had to explain this to them of course) - They shipped a full 28' pup (I packed it) from Baltimore to Indianapolis for $450 and I've gotten full pups from Northern MN to Baltimore for $900 on FedEx.
