I don't know where to begin - its so sad what happened in Iowa to the Scouts. I was awestruck when one of the scouts said he was glad it happened to them instead of other folks because they know what to do to help each other due to their training. God bless them.

Not enough Scouts in the world now days....they make the world a better place.
I never thought of the danger when i spent a few summers as a merit badge councilor and lived in a tent on a lakeshore and at the rifle-range(70-72 BSA Camp Crossland,Indiana).

My prayers are with them....sadly,they will be stronger and better from this experience......

    Peace WildBill

    p.s......mile swim with 3-5 scouts EVERY morning when i was a lifeguard...

I only spent a few years in scouting, but the motto "Always Be Prepared" has stuck with me for the last 40+ years. My heart goes out to those affected. The Loess Hills are close to I-29, yet remote enough to make access difficult in some places.

It was heartening to read about how they all helped their injured brethren.

Listening to a couple of those young men really impressed me with their spirit and maturity . But can you imagine the long term effects on those kids seeing their friends killed and helping the injured . I still have a lot of respect for them , they will make some very good MEN one day soon . America needs more like them .

Some of my best memories were of scouting. And you be surprised as to what you will learn.

BTW Those mile swims were a killer for a fat kid like me, but I know how to handle and adult who will drown you trying to stay afloat.

Mates have come and gone, but my scouting brothers are still around, and I dare say will be there at the end.
Still catch up and visit a US buddy through scouts that I met in Sydney in '88.

I found this paper folded in the pocket of my late father's Scout uniform. He and I were both very active Scouts, but at different times in our lives as he was diagnosed with MS when I was four (1971).

To my surprise, thanks to the internet I found that "The Order of the Arrow" was alive and well in PA and they were thrilled to have this piece of history I found by sheer accident in May of '07.
