I was reading this month's Colin's Corner article (OPGI) and this month they show the detailing of the engine bay on the '69 Special project. One thing caught my attention. Here's a quote: "We also painted the insides of the fenders, since they were accidentally masked off when the car was repainted. We found out that NAPA Auto Parts will custom mix your cars color and put it in an aerosol can for you, for $20! Heck of a deal. After 3 coats (and 24 hours drying time), we clear coated the panels using Dupli-Colors Clear." Here's a link to the entire newsletter: http://www.opgi.com/newsletterVol-1Iss-7-Colin.asp?#target2
Oh, I doubt they could put my car's color in a spray can for $20. Maybe they could do a two step process. Step one, spray the orange. Step two, ad twenty or thirty years of oxidation.
I had a local place, (not a NAPA) mix a couple of cans of the Sandpiper Beige for the Riv when I first got it to take care of a few spots. It was a dead on match!:TU: That was almost 15 years ago.
the store i work for does it, the only downfall through the years is it is a straight enamel in the cans and with time it will fade out a bit. funny thing is weve always done it for 14.99 a can and people always bitched about it being too expensive. i cant imagine asking 20.ive actually made them for a few board members and sent them hidden in boxes(not supposed to ups paint).
If you know you're paint code most places should be able it for you. Then get some clear to go over it if its not single stage. Ive done it for several cars and the color match has always been really good.
I read the OPG article as well and it gave me hope for a cheapie job on my front end:TU: Plus all the little rust spots that will be bondoed over
