I'm 20, and I've noticed that my generation just doesn't appreciate buicks or older GM cars that aren't super-muscle cars. I've always been a faithful euro and asian import driver until I came across an immaculate Riviera that a guy was selling for $450 because of financial difficulty... I'm really glad I got this car cause even though I had always loved the GN's, I never really opened my eyes to all the other buicks... My question is: Do any of you get scoffed at when you tell someone your project car is a Buick? I get it all the time.. But I think they're just jealous.
I don't think it has anything to do with age. I guess I'm still "young" at 30, and a good portion of my friends are into cars. I am the only one I know with Buicks. Everyone else is into Chebbys, Mopars, and Fords... although I have one "Chevy Friend" who is putting together a 66 GTO, which I guess is close enough to "kinda Buick" for me. :gt: When I got my 67 Skylark driver, some of the guys at work coined it the "drivin' mizz daizy car", and still poke fun to this day. I've had my share of "other" cars, but I always end up back to my Buicks. I guess I like to be different. :beer
Most people don't get very excited when I tell them I have a 71 Riviera. Most people don't know what it is.
No, actually, a die hard cadillac enthusiast talked to me for 45 minutes at work today about my car. I told him my car had nothing special that made it more comfy, that it was bench seat...etc... he just said "thats ok, You'll just have to get a cadillac for comfort... build the Buick to go fast... we all know they're good at that!" The general population over 40 says "I had a Buick once, fastest car I ever owned"
As far as age goes and being young. Well I am happy to let you know that I am 18 years old.......with 18 years of experience:grin: . Don't sweat it man. I think of it this way. If all the guys in my area don't want anything to do with Buicks. That leaves them ALL for me:Brow: . And from the looks of my yard and shop, I am on my way to owning all of them in my area. Although since meeting Garrison and Falley my area is getting smaller:af: . You two stay on your end of the state........p Buicks have the "grandpa" image. And thats fine. I figure I will just shock them into reality. Someone else on the board coined the phrase in regards to ricers.......... "Your ricer makes 15? h.p. at 10,000 rpms, but my Buick only needs 5000 rpm's to make 400 h.p." Not sure if the numbers are the same but you get the point. Have fun with your project and do it the way you want it. Who cares if others don't like it, I would bet that you find several HUNDRED folks here that will like it. When your done, and happy with it, your gonna have a great ride. You younger guys are gonna be the future of the Buicks. We gotta have someone totin' the flag for us. Welcome to the family. later.............................
I only have one comment and it is in reference to buickdav. Dave how is it, that you are trying to collect all cars west of topeka. does this leave future buick owners any chance. Share the wealth just give me the TII and will call it even. buicks are a lot of fun I never thought I would oen a buick until the day my 67 camaro was sold before I got there. I looked in the paper and saw a buick skylark Not knowing anything except that it was an A body buick. and I liked most A bodies just did not know the buick. Since then I would probably never own another car other than a buick. Just my opinion.
I hear what you all are saying. My best friend loves imports... My other friends in town drive a WS6, a Nova, etc... They were like :jd: when they saw me pull up in my "new" Buick!
People have no idea what a Centurion is until I pull up in it with the top down. The ladies just fly at it then:Brow: And that is reason #2 I love my Buicks... #1 is power.
I approach the situation making fun of the other people who don't know anything are ignorant and arrogant to my beloved Buick. I say stupid stuff to get them to race me, (like I'll say, "I got a v8 and it's the fastest v8 ever produced")...........and then once they see and hear my car, there is no more making fun of it, and to finish them off, I let them launch first, and walk them like they were standing still. Then they realize they've been had, man I love that game. People can say what they want, but that doesnt change one thing I have planned on doing with my projects, and it never will.
no it's not a @#!? nova!!! one night, i got a knock on the door, it was a college kid selling magazine subscriptions for his senior trip. he noticed my car in the carport and asked "is that a nova?" ou: as for me, i drove a honda for a while, but this was WAY before the fast (i.e. nitrous fueled rice gobbler) and the furious (i.e. big muffler-bigger spoiler)... when i was in high school, a friend had a 69 buick skylark, and i always loved cruisin' with him...never thought i'd buy one myself, till i found myself without a vehicle, driving a borrowed work truck, and i saw my 68 special waiting for me at a little used car lot in north alabama...the rest is history... but down here, the young'uns (21 and under) mostly drive those stupid-looking rubberband-sounding honda "race cars"...the vast majority of older american cars are all pimped out...lots of impalas, a few galaxies...i did see a wildcat (68 i think?) once, pimped out... then there's the smaller percentage, gm a-bodies kept in their original stance and non-sparkly paint jobs...mostly chevelles :boring: but a few cutlasses (i've seen one 442), a lemans or two, and i've seen three skylarks, including my special... yes, i'm a little elitist about it... scott
I would have to say that Buicks can be just as confortable as Cads. Hey my car is a couch on wheels.:Brow: It's also pretty fast for a 4000 POUND BEAST! iVAN
I think he was refering to "keep the A-Body to go fast" I vowed my next vehicle to be a motorcycle, and after that nothing newer than 1957... then maybe a big convertable...
