I saw this car at a cruise in last Saturday... A Monte Carlo convertible!

I was wondering how it would look with the top down :idea2:

The top and mechanism must have been from a Chevelle. Those would have sold if GM made them.

I talked to the owner and, yes, as you thought, the top, windshield header and mechanism are from a Chevelle. I think it would have been a big seller, too.

Bad Boattail, the car in the Hemmings article you linked is the exact same car that was at the cruise in! Cool!

Maybe that's where the current owner saw it :TU:
Any idea why he is selling it again, and what the asking price is?

I don't know why he is selling it or the asking price but I will ask him if he is at the cruise in this coming Saturday.

The first gen Montes and '69-'72 Grand Prix are the same 'cabin' as the '68-'72 A-bodies. Ive seen a few of the Pontiacs converted too; they also look good. Supposedly there's some early Chevy artwork that shows a convertible Monte in the offerings but I guess the business case didn't justify building it. Probably would have cannibalized sales from either the Chevelle, big car, or maybe even other divisions.

It is for sale. If I see the owner at the cruise in this coming Saturday, I will get the info for you.

Neat looking car. Someone knows what there doing. I have enough trouble just trying to put one rite let alone this kind of modification.
An interesting side note here is that the deck lid from these cars are a direct interchange with a 70 to 72 Skylark.

This comment is intended to add to the "what if" angle to the discussion in this thread. The Boattail Riviera Designers were originally intending it to be on the A-body platform and, I believe, use the stretched Monte Carlo/Grand Prix variation of that frame. Buick brass made the decision to put it on the B/C body full size frame and the Designers had a fit claiming that it made the proportions of the original design way different (I assume not in a positive way). Something to consider as the all three models were intended to be "personal luxury" cars. The Riviera would have been narrower, but longer.

I did a quick flip on a rough cutlass with a new top the guy used the parts from this car to convert his Gran Prix to a convertible it came out beautiful. There was a bit of metal work required

I was (and still am not) a fan of the overly long hood Monte Carlo and Grand Prix. The only value that I saw in them was that it would have been fun to install a very long engine (think V-12) in one of them. The ragtop looks really nice though...

Dad had a '69 Grand Prix.
With all that hood, the fan shroud was about two feet long.
And, to get to the back spark plug on the passenger side, one had to either raise the engine, or take a hole saw to the inner fender.
One thing though, Dad always said that Grand Prix was the fastest car he had ever driven.

The Monte Carlo convertible was at the cruise-in this afternoon. I talked to the owner and he said he was asking $25,000 and his bottom dollar was $24,000. The owner is an older gentleman who seems to be a flipper. He had several cars he was trying to sell. He bought the MC out of New Jersey.
