Replacing the yoke seal on a 1968 buick skylark, not posi. Hearing some people say to just tighten the yoke nut good and tight and others saying you have to reset the pinion preload. Yoke and seal where all that was removed. Ring and pinion where not removed. Any know the proper procedure????
    Thanks

Put a scribe mark on the yoke, the nut and the pinion. When you loosen the pinion nut, count how many turns it takes to come off. When you reinstall the yoke, line up the scribe mark on the pinion to the yoke. Then install the nut. Count the turns and tighten till the scribe mark on the nut lines up with the yoke and pinion.

You dont want tighten the nut more than it was. You might crush the crush collar more and disturb the alignment of the ring and pinion.

Proper way is to buy a new crush sleeve- it goes between the pinion inner and outer bearing. Then re-crush it all again to the proper preload WITH OUT THE carrier installed.

As to be realistic... The above will work. Just be sure you use lock tight and for best results stake the nut in place with a steel punch in a few spots where the nut meets the thread.

You can snug the nut a tad bit further...YOU DO NOT WANT A LOOSE pinion nut. It will take quit a bit to over tighten the nut by hand and doubt you will be able to do it. IF you are using a air impact YES be sure not to go too hard.

    Good luck, Jim
