Hi all... new to the board. Also new to the world of mechanics...and I just got myself a 1971 skylark that I'm hoping to cut my teeth on. its the standard 350, and is pretty cherry for the most part, both inside and out. It needs a few things, and I'm hoping to find some direction from the members. one item is the kick down cable that calls the transmission to drop down into a lower gear when you step on the throttle. I may even be referring to it wrong, but I'm sure you know what I"m talking about. I also have a junk carburetor (carter 600cfm) that leaks gas. I recently acquired a rebuilt Rochester quadrajet to install, and its really nice. I'm all insured, picking up plates today, and just begging for better weather.
Welcome. You found the right place. Anything you need to know or need to get for your car is right here. Let's get your post count past ten so you can show off your nice new ride!!!!:beers2:
Welcome, Do you need a cable? I thought I did too when I first got my GS, but on the 70 models it's linked from the gas pedal to the trans, not from the carb. It may be there, just hiding. Not sure about the 71 year models. Mike
hi 71 skylarks do have downshift cables on the firewall to the gas pedal so check below the accel cable at firewall to see if you have to cables on your pedal
welcome to the board, sound like your problems with your downshift cable and carb are pretty easy fixes should be running like a champ in no time.
It's actually called a detent cable. Sometimes they break. There are replacements out there. http://www.v8buick.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=32477&d=1095722932 http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=55558

Welcome. If your waiting on good weather, you must be from the north somewhere. It's been nice down here, except for this week. If you need a detent cable, we have some.
awesome. thanks guys... yes, the cable is still there, but it floats freely in the tranny. I can physically pull it and it has 4" of play coming out of the transmision. def. does'nt work. I took her out yesterday for the longest cruise yet. Man, did I score big on this car. got it for real cheap, and it drives like a rock. solid and straight. very nice.
