Ok, this is way off topic here, but I need to ask a question. Last night while playing basketball, I landed on someones foot and twisted my ankle. I continued to play last night, as it happened in the first game. Today it is sore and swollen, but I can still walk on it. My wife wants me to go and get it X-Rayed, but I don't think is serious enough to worry about that. It has started to turn a little purple though. I have twisted this ankle before, and it just takes time to heal. She is concerned about me getting pain pills for it, but I told her I wouldn't take them anyway as it doesn't hurt enough to take pills. I honestly believe it will be fine in @ 3 or 4 days. Am I just being stubborn :Do No: I am not one to run to the doctors for every littel thing. The last time I went to the doctors was @ 10 years ago. I just don't see the need to go to them unless I'm really really hurting, and right now I'm not. I hurt my hand more than this putting a tranny in my old truck, when it fell off the jack and rolled over my thumb. That got better too, was just sore for @ 2 weeks. What do you think.

My non-medical recomendation is to stay off it as much as possible. Try to elevate it to help the fluid drain. take advil to help swelling. ice for 15minutes 3 times a day. massage the ankle to keep stuff flowing. If the color gets darker/bigger or the pain continues go see a Doc. Heck goe see one anyway. it's probably time for a PSA test. :)

Dan, have you ever broken a bone? I've broken many, most of them my own

I once broke both my left tibia and fibula (lower leg bones) in a spiral from ankle to knee. I could move my knee and ankle, and my toes just fine.

A lot of people will say "if you can move the limb, the bone's not broken"

Those people are full of it.

If you have never broken a bone before, I will tell you, out of all the bones I've broken (with the exception of the nose and a cracked rib) they all got sore and ouchy and tender and a few turned black and purple and blue. Once I broke my arm and I thought it was a sprain for three days.

There's lots of bones in your ankle. Getting it re-broken so they can set it properly sounds distictly like anti-fun.

Talk to your doctor. If you are concerned about it enough to ask our opinion on it, you know that deep down you're worried it's broken. Get it taken care of.

I have never broken a bone to my knowledge. Of coarse, with the regularity that I go to doctors, :Do No: Tomorrow is my busiest day of the week. I will probably be on my feet most of the day. That's when it bothered me the most today, when I was walking on it for long periods of time. I'll see what it looks like tomorrow AM and go from there.
    Thanks,
    Dan :3gears:

    dan,
wait a month and writhting in pain, then go to er room when my wife(er nurse) is there. she will be glad to cut off your leg, and beat your head with it till you realize how dumb you are for waiting. (nothing against you dan.)
what i just said is what she gets for patience at er. you wouldnt believe how stupid people are. bunches of stupid stories. maybe i can get her to put some of the stories to print here.

A bad sprain can be as bad as a fracture for some. If it its getting better that usually a good sign. Just make sure you dont reinjure it and take it easy.
I have worked in the radiology field for almost 20 years. An ankle xray will take 10 minutes and some doctors are pretty cool about just ordering it and not making you have a physician visit. Take it easy and see how you do.

When I was a kid, my dad and I were running an obstacle course and he hurt his ankle. He ended up getting it x-rayed and it was only a sprain. The Dr commented about the healed break from many years ago.

My dad never broke it - to his knowledge. The Dr said it was common to think its a sprain when it is actually a break.

It might be a good idea to go have it looked at.
