I'm sick of running around with plain steel wheels, and I can't quite afford the new 17's I want, so I'm thinking about getting a set of poverty caps to use with my factory steel wheels, or possibly a set of the big car road wheels.

    Anybody have either? Thanks!

Andy, I have a few (I think 3) extra big buick road wheels, driver quality, in mpls if you're interested. $25.00 apiece, want to clean out the garage a bit! Let me know: sbrmd@aol.com

    Best regards,
    Steve.

Definitely interested. Let me know how many you have. Also, if you could measure the rim width and backspacing, that would be great.

I'm out of town right now, and won't be back until Monday, so no rush. Thanks!

Sorry John, these would be for my '62, so it doesn't sound like they will work. Thanks for posting them anyway!

Andy, just don't try to bolt on any Buick road wheels. Your hubs are larger than any of these wheels are. If you try to just tighten them down the drums will get bent, especially the aluminum front drums. What i did on my '61 LeSabre was to turn the larger part of the front hubs on a 45* angle so the rims fit properly to the drums. In the rear I removed the axles & cut a 45* on the outer most portion of the axle leaving a small lip for the drum to fit against/around.

Tom, these wheels were available beginning in '63 on the Wildcat, if my memory serves me correctly. I would just need a set of the early wheels that came on the aluminm drum equipped cars. Right???

The 1st. yr. these wheels were available was on the '64 Wildcat. The hubs were a little smaller starting in '63. What I was telling you to do is not a difficult job. Just a little time consuming. The fronts can be done on a brake lathe. The rears need to be done with a larger lathe.

Just so you know I put a set of the early Buick Road wheels on a 60 Buick LeSabre and they fit just fine. Now the ones I am talking about are the Big Valve stem rallye rims. They usually have a grey painted centers around the lug holes.

I think my dad has a set of those too.

Andy, the ones I have are the early '70's variety, 5x 5" big car pattern 15 x 6 as most of them are. I think the backspacing is only one way, don't know it tho. Price is certainly right on mine, turn 'em on the lathe and you're in business.

Yeah, they may fit, but not properly. I'm not talking about turning down the wheels, but the front hubs on the drums & the rear axle flange on the rears. Or you could use 1/4" spacers, but then you need to change the studs which is a harder job IMHO.

I put 3/16 spacers on the 66-69 Road wheels to fit my 64 Cat and they fit. I just check the lugs ever so often.

I do have a copy of a road wheel guide on pdf. if anyone wants a copy I would be happy to share.:beers2: Just pm your email to me. Its from the BCA Bugle from 2002 article, Skylark wheels also. Lots of variations, I didnt know there were so many different ones made and they all look the same:eek2:

And Thanks to Brian Laurance:bglasses: aka Centaurian, our club member for helping to make the article possible
