I am looking for a map light rear view mirror with the chrome back for a 68 Skylark/GS. I am looking for one with a decent mirror.

I have a 12" map light mirror with a bad mirror. Do you have a good mirror/glass or know where where I can get one?

    Thanks,
    Gil

If you have a good one except for the mirror send the mirror out to be resilvered. Most lose the bright, clear mirror over time anyway because the mastic attacks the silver. I can walk you throught the process. I have restored a number.

You need a hair dryer and an old wooden pop stick with no burrs on it. If there are any burrs smooth the edges with 2000 grit paper. Let me know when you get those and we will do one together here. I will post the pics move by move.

Send the mirror here for the resilvering. He has done many for me.

The day /night feature is based on the glass being cut into a wedge so flat glass will not make the grade. The glass in your present mirror is already specially cut.

If you are ready this fast we may have to proceed wiith the surgery on the patient with the blindfold on.

    1. Heat up the rubber bezel and the glass lens with the hairdryer by going back and forth. Do NOT burn the rubber. The object tis to make the rubber pliable and to soften the mastic on the back of the mirror. This rubber membrane curls over the edges of the glass and extends across the whole back of the glass.

2.Once heated begin working the edges of the membrane back to expose the edge of the lens. Reheat it as needed to keep the rubber soft and pliable. There is no need to force it. Reheat it instead.

    Jim,
I must appologize. We were heading out of town. I was waiting for the wife and kids. I guess they are now waiting for me. Let's touch base on another day... I will not be back until the weekend.
    Thanks,

I can do in in about one minute but I suggest you take it slow over a few minutes.

    3. You should now have the rubber edges flexible so that you can pull back the edges just like a pair of old gums. When it gets to this point you can see at various places the back of the edge of the lens we are ready to insert the stick.

    4. See the pics where I show what the membrane looks like with the lens removed. Now the insertion of the stick takes place where I show the rubber being pulled down with my thumb and the other pic where the end of the spoon is located. The object here is to not force it and rip the membrane or to marr the back of the lens. It you marr the back the resilvering process will never be what you want because the back side will no longer be smooth.

5 After insertion begin working it around the lens clockwise heating the rubber in front of the stick's position periodically to keep everything soft and pliable. Work the rubber in front of the sticks position after heating by pulling it back just like gums.

    6. After little over one half the way the lens will pop out. The metal is stainless so polish it while the lens is away for the resilvering. This is the best time to clean the plastic bezel edge and apply some 303 to keep it soft for the reinstallation. You can now buy a new map light lens cover or bulb as need.

Do not send the mirror to him. I discussed resilvering my mirror and he said send it in. I sent the mirror in with a check. I could never get an update on when the mirror would be done. Finally after about 18 months he told me he couldn't find the mirror or my check. He told me to get him an outline of the glass and he would cut a new mirror for me. I did, he didn't didn't and I am still out one mirror. Luckily he never cashed the check.

He also said he doesn't do it anymore. Sorry, I forgot to add that. I know he was highly recommended on the board. That's why I sent the mirror to him.
